I was charmed by many a St-Estèphe and even found a few unusually luscious examples. These wines really showed how much the northern Médoc benefited from its notably lower rainfall than the southern Médoc.
Of course all three of the most important properties – Calon Ségur, Cos d’Estournel and Montrose – have relatively recent changes of ownership and are therefore benefiting from vast investment and upgrading, which must help the reputation of the appellation. But many of the lesser wines showed well too.
