There's an implicit rivalry between New World wine-producing countries, in a way that doesn't exist for the Old World. They compete to be known as the most exciting source of wine, among UK wine-trade types anyway. The crown is probably worn by South Africa right now, although Australia is a strong contender. California has become much more trendy recently too, thanks in no small part to the In Pursuit of Balance movement (now sadly retired).
