From deep in the Napa Valley fire zone, Samantha Cole-Johnson manages to commune with her keyboard – and took this picture on 30 September, the day before her winery was evacuated.
‘Hey! Can you hand me that hose?’
J (another intern) turns in circles looking up at the catwalk on both sides. She takes a few steps to peer around the corner of the tank that I’m standing inside. ‘Where are you?’ she says, confused. ‘In here!’ She looks at the tank and laughs at my head peeking out of the racking door.
