Bordeaux 2015 – St-Émilion and satellites

Tasting St-Émilions is so much more fun than it used to be. The proportion of wines hampered by over-extraction, over-oaking and overripe fruit has perceptibly declined and in 2015 the combination of velvety tannins and charmingly ripe fruit has provided many a tasting thrill – even if its smaller neighbour Pomerol was even more obviously successful. Ch Ausone, for example, was a textbook example of balance and richness. The Vauthiers there recently took over Ch La Clotte on this fine hillside seen from Nicolas Thienpont’s Ch Pavie Macquin.
