Clos de Tart back to 1887

A highlight of my recent stint in Burgundy tasting the 2008s that are rarely shown in London's primeur week in January was a vertical of 57 vintages of the Morey-St-Denis grand cru monopole Clos de Tart, the biggest in the Côte d’Or.

This monastic domaine, consisting of a single 7.53 ha parcel of well-sited vines, was founded as long ago as 1141, almost a century before Cambridge University. It became the property of the powerful Marey-Monge family in 1791 and then was sold in 1932 to the Mâconnais Mommessin family, more famous arguably for Beaujolais than great red burgundy. Below...
