Henri Jayer leaves Burgundy while François Pinault arrives

Henri Jayer, the pope of Vosne-Romanée, died yesterday after a long period in hospital. The funeral will take place on Tuesday.
No modern winemaker in Burgundy was more widely admired. None kept his feet so firmly on the ground. None was so welcoming to nincompoops like me. With his clear diction and gentle, didactic manner, he was an ideal interviewee in our BBC tv series Jancis Robinson's Wine Course.
Although he is survived by his wife and two daughters, his exceptional vineyard holdings have long been leased to Emmanuel Rouget, an arrangement that is expected to continue. He...
