From August 2009, wines previously labelled AOC or DO (etc) could be labelled PDO and those previously labelled VdP or IGT (etc) could be labelled PGI.
The recent EU reform of the Common Market Organisation (CMO) for wine has already been reported and discussed in Last-minute agreement on EU wine reform and EU wine reform: as good as it gets. Now the subject of controlled appellations and what might become of existing European classifications such as Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) and Vin de Pays (VdP) in France, Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC), Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG)...
