'The drama of Amarone is that the world cannot get enough of it. Its success is such that it is now completely beyond the control of the Consorzio della Valpolicella'. Words spoken by Emilio Pedron (below right) on my recent visit to the historic estate of Bertani, a bastion of dignity in a sea of mediocre Amarone. Pedron is the director of one of the oldest estates in Valpolicella. It was founded in 1857 and was one of the first to commercially bottle Amarone back in the 1950s.
