Champagne and Big Bang

Was anyone else surprised listening earlier today to the scientists currently hard at work replicating Big Bang at the CERN laboratory deep below the alps?
We had been warned that some scientists believed that such was the enormity of the speed of the particles about to be unleashed that the world could end (implode, I think) as a result of the experiment. (Forgive me if this is a rather woolly explanation.)
There was the most nerve-wracking lead-up with a false start and commentators desperately trying to explain all the extremely high-powered and virtually unintelligible science involved.
