Sicily's table wines may be riding high but the island's most famous fortified wine is in the doldrums, laments Tim. See also his tasting notes.
Murder? No, not this time … think fortified wines.
Madeira! No. Malmsey? No, that’s madeira. Maury? No. Málaga? Interesting, but no. Muscats, various? Nope.
OK, I give up, what?
Marsala. The forgotten ‘M’ of the fortified wine world, originating from the eponymous port town on the west coast of Sicily, following the creation of the style in 1773 by an Englishman, John Woodhouse.
If all styles of fortified wine have had a hard time in recent decades...
