Ernie Els – more than a golfer

Celebrities tend to put their names on wine labels in the twilight of their careers but golfer Ernie Els who won the World Matchplay Championship yesterday is obviously in his prime and, even more unusually, the wines which carry his name tend to be superlative by any standards.

His red blend featured in the coveted five-star ranking in the annual John Platter South African Wine Guide for both 2004 and 2005, and in both cases I thoroughly approve of the choice.
