Faithful readers may have wondered why our diligent correspondent, US wine merchant and German wine expert David Schildknecht of Vintner Select, Ohio has been so silent recently. I know I have. Below are the answers, all written by him, bless him.

This is a vintage of classical virtues, as you have noted, Jancis. I frankly found the very best collections this year to be as fine as any in my memory. "Better than 2001?" you may ask. Well, not in the Middle Mosel, no, but certainly for a few top growers in other regions. Better than 1990...
