Ch Montrose tasting notes – 37 vintages back to 1888

See wine news from 24 September for a full account of this extraordinary tasting in Paris on 12 September 2005, and purple prose for a small sidelight on it. We tasted wines right back to the era before this second growth came in to the family which has owned it for 117 years. All the wines came direct from the cellars at Ch Montrose, having been recorked if necessary and topped up with the same vintage. Wines earlier than 1920 had been stored in the Charmolües’ personal cellar, which is not, unlike the château cellar, air-conditioned.
