I recently wrote an article (What’s in an AVA?) which looked at how helpful AVAs are for a consumer in determining typicality or quality. My conclusion was that the majority of the 261 AVAs in the US are really helpful only for geographical orientation purposes. However, it is true that around a quarter of AVAs accomplish something more than this and these AVAs prove their own worth.
