Modern Vega Sicilia, et al

See wine news for my take on Vega Sicilia's recent changes in winemaking policy.

These wines from Bodegas Vega Sicilia and its newer enterprises Alión and Alquiriz in Toro were tasted in March 2003. All wines are Ribera del Duero except the Alquiriz.

Vega Sicilia Valbuena 1997 16.5 Drink 2004-09
Colour almost deeper than the 1998 (because of the unusual 15 per cent Cabernet deepening the Tinto Fino aka Tempranillo?). Very mellow rich, supple nose. Spicy, high VA. Lovely nose but a bit austere on the start of the palate. Velvety middle but very dry on the finish.
