The coastal mountains of Sonoma long served as places of retreat for city dwellers seeking peace and elites seeking privacy. Even today, Christian camps, exclusive social clubs, and high-security Buddhist retreats populate the region. In 1996, planting vineyards in such a remote location seemed a fool’s errand.
