Burgundy 2003 tasting notes: C-D

Friday 28 January 2005

The tasting notes are in alphabetical order by producer (sur)name, but you may change that.

Very dark purplish crimson. Slightly rustic nose with definite CO2. A bit tarted up. The tannins are too severe for the fruit. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2007

A bit heavy, thick and flabby. Stewed, but comforting. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2008

Dominated by oak. Quite thick, sweet and seductive. Dry finish. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2010

Very thick, dark and opulent, but I do want more acidity. A bit furry. (JR)

Drink 2007 – 2012
Very exaggerated purple. Thick and opulent. Needs a bit more lift. Furry tannins. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2012
Fresh and relatively lively fruit. Yes! Some spice and definite inky tannins. Probably will get there eventually. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2014

My sample was a bit reduced and exaggerated and therefore impossible to read. Too aggressive to enjoy at the moment. Harsh. (JR)

Drink 0

Vaguely medicinal on the nose. Quite harshly structured. Lots of tannin. Not enough charm or fruity concentration. (JR)

Drink 2008 – 2015
Some real layers of flavour. Now this is quite interesting! But still very gripping tannins on the finish. The finish is worryingly dry. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2015

Cool. Watery. Easy. Some lime and minerals. Chewy. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2010
Quite lively and vivacious. Quite good depth, but not enough lift. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2010
A bit dull and taut and grey. Astringent. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2010
Scented. Quite full. Reasonably exciting, but not fine. A bit coarse. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2011

Smudgy nose. Lots of quite sharp fruit, then very dry, grating tannins. Indistinct. (JR)

Drink 2007 – 2009
Slightly disconcerting boiled-sweets aroma. Very sweet and chewy. Not graceful but lively. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2010

Very sweet and thick. Lacks real freshness but is probably a true representative of the vintage. Sweet start; dry end. (JR)

Drink 2008 – 2015
Bright, savoury nose. Lovely fresh fruit on this sample. Caresses the palate, and only very slightly scrawny. Certainly not hot. Light and spicy with great flirtatious refreshment and value. Round. Much softer than usual at this stage. A bit harsh on the finish. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2011
Cask sample.
Fresh and racy. Good entertainment value. Needs a bit of time. Bright crimson. Slightly dull. Quite concentrated and intense on the nose, then definitely charming on the palate. Relatively light and gentle. Probably not quite enough intensity for the price. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2013

Pretty fine and lively. Sweet, rich, desperately trying to stay inside a corset to be as elegant and lean as possible. Slightly dry finish. Easy, open. (JR)

Drink 2005 – 2008

This plot is virtually surrounded by Corton-Charlemagne and was planted for the first time only 15 years ago.
Sweet, jolly, floral. Not fine but friendly. (JR)

Drink 2005 – 2010
Tense, mineral, exciting nose. Quite soft acidity but lots of sweetness too. Fairly open already though obviously youthful. Pure, fresh, not especially dense. Transparent. Just good sweetish white burgundy rather than thrilling. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2015

Deep, bright crimson. Sweet, round, slightly dusty tannins. Strange! (JR)

Drink 2005 – 2010

Spicy nose. Punchy, lively, easy with lots of sap and concentration. Very sweet, would positively slide down. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2010
Deep crimson. Quite alcoholic. Powerful and meaty. Sweet start with lots of cherry flavour – almost cherry syrup in fact. Round, velvety. Pommard’s iron fist in a velvet glove but terribly forward. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2010

Rich, mossy nose. Acid sticks out a bit which is a shame because there is very good fruit underneath. Again, slightly dusty tannins. A bright light shines under a layer of intervention. Definitely sweet! (JR)

Drink 2007 – 2014

Very sweet and winning – cherry sweet – and then the tannins insist, especially on an extremely dry finish. Long but lacks a bit of freshness. This amount of sweetness makes the low acidity so obvious. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2012

Smoky-rich nose, very opulent palate with some nice structure. Not very serious, though, and a very slight hint of wet dishcloths. (JR)

Drink 2004 – 2007

Very ripe and full and sweet. New World! Why buy this? (JR)

Drink 2005 – 2007
Relatively pale. Sweet and round and flattering. Low acidity. Easy, but needs a bit more refreshment. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2011

Sweet and over the top. Difficult to discern structure. Very hot finish. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2011
Some real race and delicacy on top of massive ripeness. Long. Interesting! (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2012

Very pale crimson. Pretty perfume. Soft and gentle. Very sweet and appealing, though it could be a little sickly by the second glass. (JR)

Drink 2005 – 2008
Very fruity and assertive on the nose, but ultimately a bit too spindly for the price. Strawberry fruit. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2007
Deep crimson. Thick, dry, and quite rich, yet lively, too. Very pronounced tannins on the finish. Too severe on the finish. (JR)
Drink 2009 – 2012
Mid-crimson. A bit smudgy on the nose. Slightly stewed fruit. Dry finish. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2011
Not a deep colour, nor a deep scent. Quite pronounced acidity and then very dry tannins on the finish. Stolid. Very dry, inky finish. The 2002 tasted alongside had much more refreshing fruit. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2011

Perfumed and quite refreshing. Fruit and tannin are in okay balance, but not exceptional. (JR)

Drink 2008 – 2010
Very sweet at first, then very tough. Not quite in balance. Very hard work. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2013

Firm, thick and inky. Quite deep and concentrated. Uncompromising. Not charming, but no shortage of extract. (JR)

Drink 2009 – 2014
Very fruity start, but with a brake of prolonged cooling of fruit. Not fully expressive. Something pharmaceutical. (JR)
Drink 2010 – 2015
Sweet and medicinal, but lots of pleasure. Lots of density. Tannins should eventually fade. (JR)
Drink 2010 – 2020
Relatively light crimson. Very slightly cheesy on the nose, then extremely solid. Full and rather exuberant, but definitely house style. Sweetness and density. Needs a bit of time. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2015
Deep crimson. Slightly cheesy nose, but beautifully sweet on the palate. Very true to the domaine. Very correct and 2003. I’d like slightly more acidity. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2013
Broad, scented and solid. Utterly true to its origin, despite vintage character. Thick, dense and pretty stolid. Strawberry mivvi (for those who remember these ice creams on a stick…) Too expensive for my taste. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2012
Relatively light crimson. Very slightly cheesy on the nose, then extremely solid. Full and rather exuberant, but definitely house style. Sweetness and density. Needs a bit of time. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2015
Very exotic nose. Some honeyed oak. Ripe pears on the nose. Very fat. Almost whisky barrel. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2008
Mid crimson. Quite liqueur like on the nose. Intense. Thick and dense with a certain polish. Quite dramatic and certainly sweet and quite brûlée, which is house style. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2012
Quite brutal nose. Firm. Solid. More sumptuous than many. Quite sleek and easy. Big mouthful of not very subtle fruit. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2011
Very bright and dense. Bright and nutty and quite interesting. Spicy. A bit hard on the finish. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2012
Deep crimson. Sweet and thick and very exotic, with masses of concentrated fruit. Good balance. Lots of beguiling ripe cherry flavours, with real texture and structure. Definitely sumptuous. Tannins very well hidden. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2014
Relatively cool nose, but surprisingly opulent on the palate. Some chew. Atypical. Nice wine, but not especially Chablis. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2008
Cool and quite racy nose, but not sufficient acidity. Quite long. Pretty good. Definitely long. Okay value. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2010
No pressing need to spend the extra (over the standard Chablis). Exotic hazelnut cream nose, but some acidity, too. Lots of concentration, even a bit hot. Not classic. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2010

Some acidity and life and green notes. Pretty good, but too expensive for such an atypical wine. Greengage flavours. (JR)

Drink 2007 – 2012
Dark crimson. Soft, round fruit. Juicier than many other Bize vintages. Round and satisfying. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2012
Bright crimson. A bit stinky and reduced on the nose. Sweet, fresh start on the palate, then very chewy. Hard work at the moment. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2013

Not integrated. A bit dull. Not 100% frank or direct on the nose. Surprisingly lean. Quite concentrated in terms of alcohol and lots of acidity. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2008
Round and winning. Good balance of ripe fruit and acidity. Perfectly respectable. Finishes slightly hot. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2009

Light nose. Rather severe acidity. Not harmonious. Tastes as though there is some unresolved added acid. (JR)

Drink 2005 – 2008
Lots of fruit at first, but then the oak grasps and rasps the palate with too much zeal, I fear. Quite dense and fragrant though. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2010
Heady, rich, chewy, dense, dry. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2012
Extremely deep colour. Round, sweet, chewy. Just a bit too extracted to be fun to drink. (JR)
Drink 2010 – 2014
Virtually no nose. Some depth of flavour and savour on the palate. Quite dense. Lemon oil and herb. Quite interesting. Savoury. Relatively long. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2012
Perfumed. Big and round, but not as pure as Clos de la Mouchère. A bit big and formless. Clumsy. Still slightly astringent. Hot and oily. Use for massage purposes? (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2012
Sweet, direct and vigorous. Spreads across the palate. Quite flirtatious. Still quite chewy. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2011
Cask sample. Lively crimson. Perfumed and flirtatious. Full and soft and easy. Chewy finish. Good energy and balance. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2012
Cask sample. Deep crimson. Lifted. Some slightly odd oaky nose. Lots of acidity and definite astringency. Very, very chewy. Needs time. (JR)
Drink 2009 – 2013
Cask sample. Bright crimson. Bright fruit. Quite sweet. Lots of energy. Lots of fruit. Not subtle, but very competent. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2009

Hot, unspecific nose. More broad than pointed. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2006
Quite rich. Almost fat, but lots of ripe, easy fruit for the price. Good value. Very slight astringence. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2007
Savoury. Some curry(!) on the nose. Interesting. Lively. Seemed livelier tasting it after Rémi Jobard. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2010
Slightly lacking in concentration. Sweet and honeyed and fine, but not enough sap and savour. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2011
Thick and dense, with sufficient fruit to dominate the tannins. Still quite severe, but not irredeemably so. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2012
Not as deep as some. Intense, rather exaggerated oak on the nose, but lovely ripe, if very slightly flabby, fruit on the palate. Just not very like Burgundy. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2012
Quite deep crimson. Fresh, lively nose. Crunchy and rather severely dry, and drying, fruit. Even slightly bitter. Stolid but certainly not charming. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2011
A bit tired and overworked on the nose. Tough, with fruit almost submerged. Very severe. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2010
Slightly brownish crimson. Strong perfume. Very flattering. Lots of makeup. Well confected. Very sweet and lots of fruit in the middle. Broad. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2012
Mid-crimson. Slightly chestnut flavours, similar to those I often find on the wines of his wife Ghislaine Barthod, on the nose. Exotic nose. Round, gentle palate. Sweet, but too facile. A bit flabby. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2011
Honest village fruit. A fair fist of it, without being desperately exciting. Solid, but needs more lift. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2011
Quite evolved nose. Gentle. Very, very fruity and sweet. Positively unctuous, with very good acid balance. Raspberry cordial. Not the most serious or ambitious, but bags of pleasure. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2009
Vegetal, evolved nose. Lots of sweet fruit. Perhaps not quite enough acidity. Tannins dominate. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2011
Light and quite stinky, but lots more personality than Hautes-Côtes most years. Round and quite fruity, but simple. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2006
Cask sample. Relatively light in all senses. Refreshing acidity. Pretty, but a bit stringy on the finish. Some obvious sweetness. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2008
A little cardboardy on the nose and even a hint of herbaceousness! Dull. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2007
Scented. Off dry with some obvious astringence. A bit ungainly at the moment. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2008

Really delicious nose with exciting tension and some creaminess. An early developer nevertheless – but much more successful than the two wines tasted before it. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2008
Relatively pale crimson. Very slightly charred note on the nose, but the fruit is relatively fresh and lively. Slightly powdery edge. Round and chewy. It will probably come right, though the finish at present is terribly dry. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2014
Big, burly and almost cheesy on the nose. Lots of acidity, and quite sleek and silky. Quite open and accessible already, although the tannins insist. Rather delicious and charming. Slightly hot finish. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2014
Lemony tingle on the nose. Full, opulent start that quickly gives way to the alcohol. A little hole in the middle. A hint of astringence. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2008
Quite floral nose. Relatively light. Broad and easy charm. Very round. Something to please, but not to intrigue. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2009
A little pinched. More mineral than many Meursaults. Surprisingly lacking in opulence, considering appellation and vintage. Holding back. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2008
Rich and round. A crowd-pleaser. Pretty evolved already, though the acidity seems sufficient to hold it together for a few years. Useful for restaurants? (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2010
Herbal, discreet nose. Not the most expressive bottle. Obviously still quite taut. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2011
Again, still quite discreet on the nose. Some rich savour on the palate which convinces. This should get somewhat more interesting eventually. But it’s far from thrilling. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2012
Smells more mineral than floral. Not especially concentrated, but at least it’s not especially alcoholic and hot. Just a bit dull. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2009
Big and savoury nose. A hint of almonds and lemon. Pretty intense and not at all sweet. Quite impressive, but workmanlike rather than ethereal. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2014
Green, nerveux nose with mineral undertow. Sweet start on the palate, then creamy. A very intriguing, sleek, sophisticated wine. Quite sinewy. Long. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2015
Much less open and expressive than the Chevalier-Montrachet. Some citrus notes after the obvious mass on the nose. Round and seamless, but not, yet, especially intense. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2015
Paleish purple. Surprisingly “cool”, introvert nose. Then something slightly stewed on the palate. I yearn for fresher fruit. Ultimately a bit hollow. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2008
Purple. Vegetal nose. Fruity start on the palate, then a pretty dry finish. A bit mean. Dryness on the edge of the palate. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2009
Quite deep purple. Brambly fruit with a dry edge. If this were Australian, I would not be surprised. Far from the purest Pommard I have encountered. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2010
Some density of colour and flavour. Relatively lifted nose. Rich palate entry. Big and burly with a very dry (in both senses) finish. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2011
Mid bluish purple. Some vegetal character on the nose. Quite savage tannins. These need time, but on the other hand there is great concentration of fruit. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2010
Deep purple. Slightly fusty nose – an old attic? Good fruit attack on the palate. Still quite chewy. Honest expression of the appellation. Needs time. Dry tannins. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2012
Mid crimson-purple. Slightly stewed nose. Vivacious fruit captures the palate and initially distracts it from pretty severely dry tannins on the finish. Stewed cherry pie. Great if you like stewed cherry pie. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2013
Mid purple. Relatively fresh, lively nose. Lots of pure Pinot for a change. Tannins seem convincingly in balance. What the French call gouleyant, juicy and appetising, sappy. Long and refreshing. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2014

Real intensity and some prunes on the nose. An edge of something exotic and burnt. 'Eau de Beaune'? Certainly an essence rather than anything less concentrated. Exotica. Not for me, but some will adore the concentration. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2014
Deep crimson. This one vibrates with life. Round, sumptuous fruit. Exceptional depth of round fruit seems soft to counteract the dry finish. Bravo! (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2015
Slightly vegetal and stewed on the nose. Quite dry, severe tannins. Hard work, without the inner glow of the Volnay Caillerets Ancienne Cuvée Carnot. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2012
Deep crimson. A sturdy nose. Quite impressive. Round, cherry flavours. Good fruit on the front of the palate. Dry finish, but this is a wine trying very hard to get its balance. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2013
Deep colour. Playful nose – a rather confident depth of ripe fruit flavour without any too obvious burnt or stewed notes. Great depth of cherry fruit completely overlays the tannins, which are considerable. Wait for this wine. (JR)
Drink 2009 – 2015

Solid, sturdy nose. Workmanlike. Convincing balance between fruit and tannins. Some lively acidity evident. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2009
Mid purple. Slightly smudgy nose, then acidity a bit too marked. Tannins insist with vice-like grip. Out of balance. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2009
Scented, confident nose. Quite intense. Lots of fruity attack on the palate. Tannins are a little dry. Very convincing wine for the medium term. In balance and lively. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2013
Light nose. Not quite the depth of the Nuits St-Georges Clos des Argillières, but more race and nerve. Slightly drying finish. Sturdy. Okay, but not inspirational. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2012
Racy fruit dominates, though the finish is very dry (versus sweet). Fresh cherry flavours. Lively, but not obviously grand cru quality. A bit disjointed. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2015
Strange, not entirely clean notes. Very fat. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2006
Bright crimson. Very sweet and jewelly on the nose. A bit of severe acidity on the palate. Quite lean on the finish. Jagged. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2008
Opulent, round and sweet, but with some sulphidey savour. Overdelivers for the price, as usual, but drink now. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2006
Liquorice and tar. Lots of pleasure, if a slight whiff of the stinks lab. Great fruit. Great price. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2009
Cask sample.
Introvert, smoky and round. Could do with slightly more acidity. A bit fat on the palate. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2008

More textured. Slightly dry and more long term than the standard Meursault. Real density and some astringence. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2008
Cask sample. Almost eucalyptus. Strange cough-medicine quality. Sweet, then definitely a sore-throat wine. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2010
Rather lean and floral on the nose, with some cough-medicine notes. Very herbal. Very Genevrières. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2010
Sweet, but with something still in reserve. Thick and sweet and grainy textured. Needs time, but beautifully pure and clear. Lots of pleasure. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2011
Aggressively cool nose. Slightly stewed fruit. Grainy texture. A bit tired. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2008

Alcoholic, heavy and amorphous. Some acidity. (JR)

Drink 2005 – 2007
Liquorice. Heavy. Alcoholic. Big! But not enough sinew or framework. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2008
Quite exotic notes. Full, with some layers. Honey, and not quite enough acidity. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2007
Some real tension (very rare in this vintage!) and life on the nose. Then the ballast of ripe fruit. Very attractive. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2007

Not as expressive as the Pouilly-Fuissé Vinzelles at the moment. Marked acidity. Very full and exotic. Greengages. Slightly dangerous. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2009
The second year they have produced this bottling from the cooler soils of Vergisson. Full, round and fleshy, though still quite restrained at the moment. Strange sort of sweetness overlays this at the moment. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2010

Deep crimson. Very rich nose. Winning concentration. Quite firm tannins. Lots of concentration. This will always need food. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2009
Perfumed and ripe. Lots of fruit and quite suave. Quite marked acidity. Definitely a fair price. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2010

Bright crimson. Boiled sweets-cherry flavour. Lots of fruit and charm. Broad. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2011
Broad and easy. Charming. Fine, but firm, tannins. Inky finish. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2011
Quite powerful, with lots of fruit. Relatively delicate, but there is sufficient fruit for the tannins. Just! Real sweetness. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2012
Like some exotic, if slightly oaky, liqueur on the nose. Sweet and slightly mentholated. Not the purest, and pretty tough on the finish. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2015
Light, floral and green. Quite ripe and well balanced. Good texture. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2008
Not much nose. Lots of extract. Round texture. Should become more interesting. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2010
Sweet. Too sweet. A bit flabby. Round. Still quite astringent. Green notes. Life. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2010
Mid-crimson. Very sweet and charming, if not the most serious. Round. Slightly fizzy. Not much weight, and very, very slightly lacking in acidity. Very dry, fine tannic finish. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2010
Cask sample.
Quite deep. Strong stewed-fruit nose. Quite jagged fruit on the palate. Out of balance at the moment. Less charming than Saint Véran, without great weight on the palate. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2011
Cask sample.
Full, sumptuous, opulent nose. But slightly skinny on the palate. Slightly cool finish. Very slight hint of beetroot. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2012
Cask sample. Quite deep crimson. Thick and sweet. Quite marked, but ripe, tannins. Round and relatively voluptuous. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2015

Cask sample
.
Very deep crimson. Some rhubarb. A hint of tar and liquorice. Pommard definitely asserts itself. Quite dry and tough. Uncompromising. (JR)
Drink 2010 – 2018

Relatively fragrant, yet intense, nose. Sweet and round. Full spread on the palate. Quite flattering, but not good value. Silky tannins. (JR)

Drink 2007 – 2012

Mid-crimson. Low-key nose. Correct and quite fruity on the palate. Chewy and even slightly stringy. Definitely fizzy. (JR)

Drink 2007 – 2011

Cask sample. Deep crimson. Relatively intense fruit. Big and silky. Lovely fruit quality without being too sweet or ripe. Round and fruity. (JR)

Drink 2007 – 2015

Deep crimson. Silky, satiny texture. Great spread of red fruits. Punchy, yet subtle. This is good! (JR)

Drink 2007 – 2015

Cask sample. Some really interesting top notes on a lovely, seductive, sweet, fruity base with enough acidity. Lots there. (JR)

Drink 2008 – 2017

Scented. Quite exotic. Quite a bit of oak still. Sweet and rich. Full and dense, but I’d like very slightly more acidity. (JR)

Drink 2008 – 2017

Quite nervy and naïf, but solidly respectable for that. Some richness and creaminess that one rarely encounters in a Pernand-Vergelesses. (JR)

Drink 2005 – 2006

Light nose. Slightly floral. Not intense, but serviceable. Very slightly astringent. A fair price, but not thrilling. (JR)

Drink 2005 – 2008
Lemony fruit, but a bit loose and fat. Dull. A lack of life. Slightly astringent. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2008

Very difficult to see grand cru quality or intensity on the nose. Sweet and full, but not exciting. A bit chewy and angular. Big, but not interesting at the moment. (JR)

Drink 2008 – 2012

Simple, juicy, frank, very ripe fruit. A bit loose and light, but good value (JR)

Drink 2005 – 2006

Bluish purple. Very juicy and not obviously oaked. Very fruit-dominated and easy for early drinking. (JR)

Drink 2005 – 2007
Cask sample. Quite deep crimson. Vegetal/herbaceous topnotes. Big, round, and sweet. Again, a very light hand on the oaking, and it produces quite voluptuous, very, very fruity wines. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2012
Lively, if relatively simple, nose. Straightforward, ripe, very slightly pruney fruit on the palate. Slightly drying tannins on the palate. Hard work! Some life here, though. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2012

Bright crimson. Very slightly cheesy on the nose. Some cough medicine quality. Sweet, but not desperately refreshing. Dry finish. Grainy texture. Rasping tannins. (JR)

Drink 2008 – 2015
Cask sample.
Quite lively, chewy fruits on the nose. Slightly severe acidity and dryness. Palate definitely dries out on the finish. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2009
Cask sample. Quite pale. Nutty on the nose. Taut and slightly astringent. Stringy. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2009
Cask sample.
Very light and attenuated. Astringent. Almost green. Very light, almost spindly nose. Very drying sensation on the palate at the finish, lighter than the Savigny. Where’s the fruit? Not what I seek in Burgundy, though it’s definitely a 2003. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2009
Light, slightly tired, overworked nose. Not enough matière in the middle. A bit dead and stringy. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2008
Something noticeably vegetal on the nose. Curious. Quite solid, ripe fruit on the palate. Almost a burnt note. More substance than the Aux Fourneaux or the Ile des Vergelesses. Not graceful. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2012
Good colour. Good balance but very light on the nose, but not immediately grand cru quality or weight. A sweet, almost bonbon start. Quite insistently dry tannins. A lack of freshness and slightly obvious acidity. Not harmonious. A bit too self-consciously confected. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2015

Very, very fruit, flattering nose. Quite round and even some delicacy. Round and easy and even some potential. (JR)

Drink 2005 – 2008
Cask sample. Exceptionally deep crimson. A bit exaggerated on the nose, as though given a very dramatic cold soak. Big, round, sweet brambles. Gives a lot of pleasure, but absolutely no relation to what one usually expects from a burgundy. So sweet and strong it almost tastes like a Grenache. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2008
More acidity than the Teurons. Very big and fat and exaggerated. It will probably last longer, but definitely not fine. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2009

CS. Exceptionally deep crimson. Quite silky texture and much more life than the Teurons or the Vignes Franches. Still some tannin and something left to give. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2011

Full and sweet and rather exaggerated. Very, very carefully made, but the finished result seems a bit unnatural to me. Big and smooth and heavily oaked. Not good value. (JR)

Drink 2007 – 2012

Dark and rich. Lots of ripe fruit and masses of dry tannins. Very typical 2003, but not expensive. Good value. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2010
Very dark and rich and thick. A real crowd-pleaser, till the end. Very dry tannins. But lots of fruit, too. Slight plum notes. But sufficiently refreshing. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2012
Thick and dense. Not fragrant. Too tannic and extracted. I can’t see this resolving itself. (JR)
Drink 0

A bit dull. Full, but flabby. Astringent now. Hot. No! (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2007
Dull and heavy. Plodding, but slightly astringent. Overpriced. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2007
A bit dull and inexpensive. Some liquorice, but heavy. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2008
Sweet, alcoholic, and formless. Slithers. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2007

Very, very sweet and gentle on the palate. Sweet and round. Definite tannins, but not excessive. Pretty good value. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2008

Sweet and thick. Tannins a little severe, but a good mouthful of wine. Dry finish. Needs time. (JR)

Drink 2008 – 2014
Cask sample. Dark, bluish purple. Intense, fruity, sweet and very slightly jammy, but with lots of charm and punch. The first 2003 with even vaguely animal notes. Big, burly and autumnal. Quite severe, chewy finish for now. Great sweetness underneath. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2015
Cask sample. Deep purplish crimson. Very slightly overripe on the nose. Needs just a little more freshness. Quite rich and fruity and round. Lots of spice and fruit. The most accessible tannins of these Nuits St-Georges. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2010
Quite a bit of quite stern oak. Needs time. Lots of exotic, seductive fruit, but a very firm framework. Need a hammer and chisel for this wine. (JR)
Drink 2010 – 2017

Full and round. Very fruity. Quite thick. Bruno says this has severe tannins, but they seem light relative to many other wines. (JR)

Drink 2005 – 2008

Sweet. Too flabby and tired. No refreshment. (JR)

Drink 2005 – 2006
Lots of sweet, ripe fruit. A bit expensive for a Savigny. Not quite enough for the price, but pretty good. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2010
Mid red. Lots of ripe, charming fruit. Forward. Some structure, but no shortage of fruit. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2013

Mid red. Very, very sweet. Lots of charm. Easy, flattering, early drinker. Some spice and delicacy. Not the most serious. (JR)

Drink 2007 – 2015

Sweet. Perhaps too sweet. A little bit overdone for me, though I suppose you could enjoy it this minute. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2013
Very exciting, vibrant nose. Real tension there (unlike the Clos St-Jacques). Relatively loose and open, but with lots of lacy, entrancing fruit. Expensive, but not ludicrously so. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2015
Bright crimson. Fragrant nose. Lots of fruit. Quite charming. A bit hot on the finish, but lots of sweetness. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2008
Nervy, lively nose. Lots of fruit and a slightly dry edge. Quite sturdy and workmanlike. Solid on the palate. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2009

Scented. Very fruity on the palate, though the robust, burly tannins insist at the finish. Very correct and thick. Well done. Quite charming. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2011
Cask sample.
Light crimson. Light and taut and sweet. Quite gentle and sweet with some freshness, but no great depth. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2012
Cask sample.
Powerful menthol aroma. Deep and chewy. Round and fruity. Very gentle, but not very intense. A bit light on the finish. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2013
Cask sample.
Brûlée indeed. Definite burnt notes. Not 100% fresh. Lots of acidity. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2012
Cask sample. Sweet cherry cough sweets. Quite winning. Lots of fruit, though with no shortage of tannin. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2014
Lightish crimson. Very sweet, “modern” nose. Slightly tarty wine – too much makeup and not enough true vineyard flavour. Not expensive, though. Should appeal to lovers of New World Pinot Noir looking for a bargain. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2007
Low-key nose. Pretty ordinary. Clean. Hot. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2006
Much richer than normal, and very charming. Round and sweet. Perhaps too sweet. Hot finish. A bit dangerous. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2007
Some savour on the nose. Very sweet start, but soft acidity. Good value. Racy. Slightly astringent still. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2008

Certainly concentrated fruit. Quite sweet and fruity. Lively and aromatic. German style. Long. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2009
Savoury nose. Gold and round. Full, yet lively and flattering. Not too sweet. Lovely, round texture. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2010
Less expressive than Les Vergers, but with lots of weight and richness and spice. Lots of alcohol. Quite hot finish. Not for the faint-hearted. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2011
Lacks a bit of acidity, but there is life and nerve there. Hot finish. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2009
Not nearly enough concentration for the price, but okay constitution. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2011
Very deep crimson. Very, very full and ripe. Sweet and charming. Rich, ripe, cherry flavours. Very, very round and satiny with far more ripeness than usual. Quite unusual, and a good buy. So round and fruity! Very, very well made. Great balance. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2011
Deep crimson. Sample slightly reduced and fizzy. Difficult to judge. Muted, with fruit suppressed. Stringy finish. Quite delicate matière. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2012
Cask sample. Very firm, concentrated nose. Lots of density and no shortage of acidity and tannin. This is slightly more like the old Comte Armand style, but with an additional smoothness. Dry finish. Not as magisterial as the Hubert de Montille Les Rugiens. It may take on weight. Already quite full, convincing and round. Powerful cherry flavours with structure and some appetizing vegetal character. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2014
Full, broad and sweet. Quite floral, but light. No savour. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2007
Quite rude and crude on the nose. Sweet and relatively loose, with lots of CO2. Very chewy. Ambitious. Confident. Something almond-like. Very strong. Very lively. Very bio. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2013
Bright crimson. Sweet, almost brutal. Bursting with energy. Punchy impact. This one will run and run. Quite distinctive. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2014
Heavily perfumed. Scented. Lots of fruit in a quite raw, but admirable, state. A hint of rhubarb rock. Like a wild animal. Real pizzazz. It delivers, though it’s too expensive. Very, very long. It really vibrates on the finish. Difficult to spit. It’s a great story that someone as relatively young and untutored as this is making a wine with such vitality and character. (JR)
Drink 2009 – 2020
Quite light. Sweet and scented. Certainly fresh enough. Lots of tannin. Quite dry. Very inky finish. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2010
Slightly low-key fruit on the nose. Round. Quite juicy on the palate. Lightweight. Tannins are held in check until the very end. “Pretty”. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2010
Quite deep crimson. Strange oak notes on the nose? Lots of sweet fruit to start, then an extremely savage, dry finish. Unbalanced. A bit stringy. Certainly not charming. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2011
Slightly lightweight and dull. Terrible lack of acidity. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2008

Chocolatey, almost chestnut nose. Burly and quite rich. Very sturdy tannins. Dense. Spreads. Full. A bit of grip at the finish. Uncompromising. (JR)

Drink 2008 – 2013
Cask sample. Quite dramatic impact. Flirtatious cherry fruit. Very sweet and round and charming. Concentrated. Quite dry finish, but confident and convincing for the mid to long term. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2016
Cask sample. Transparent crimson. Quite light and not very perfumed. Good substance. Very sweet and round. Lively. Good balance. Still lots of tannin in evidence. Needs time. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2014
Quite deep on the nose and very, very rich. Very exciting, heady nose. Lovely, round, bright and with good balance. Chew and life and interest and length. Nice bite (as opposed to astringence) on the finish. Really lively. Well done. (JR)
Drink 2009 – 2018
Much livelier than most Maconnais. Rich, tense and exciting. Some batonnage character. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2007
Tense and definitely long-term. Positively green! (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2010
Full and broad. Honeyed. Slightly vegetal. Real texture. Lots of chew there. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2009
Sweet and rich. Dancing and lively, with green elements revitalising this potentially heavy mix. Well done! (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2010

Full and broad and exciting. White peach flavours. Who could object? (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2010

Full and broad, with some flabbiness. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2008
Honeyed. Sulphidey. Real bite and depth. Satiny and exciting. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2011
Cask sample. Deep crimson. Slightly rhubarby nose. Lots of simple fruit at first, but very, very dense and astringent. Raw, but intense and lively. Some freshness. Quite cool. True Pommard but I can’t quite see the elements for greatness, myself. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2013
Cask sample. Bright crimson. Fragrant. Lots of fruit and some structure. Much more convincing than the Vaumuriens. Still stern, but there is potential. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2014
Cask sample. Deep crimson. Slightly roasted flavours, then disconcertingly gassy. But there is some substance here. Dry finish, but just about enough cherry fruit. Some vegetal notes on the nose. Sweet, seductive, flattering start. Round. Pretty good. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2015
Cask sample. Sweet and seductive. Some slightly toasty/coffee-flavoured oak. Freshness and real Pommard density. Very taut, but a charmer, too, with lots of sweet fruit. Great fruity attack and more or less enough acidity. Bravo! This is very convincing. Real energy and sufficient concentration. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2016
Sweet and simple and ripe. Needs structure, though there is acidity. Just slightly too expensive. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2007
Cool, classic nose – very refreshing. Quite sweet and ripe on the palate. Drink soonish, but nothing to complain about here. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2008
Hazelnut cream on the nose. Quite interesting. Perhaps too fat for its own good. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2010
More classic, wet stone nose than the Beauroy. Slightly fizzy. Lots of green fruit charm. Lively and dense. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2012

Still some nerve underneath the ripeness. A little tired. Even an edge of curry spice! A bit simple. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2010
Again, a bit simple. Sweet fruit, alcohol. Not enough nerve. Almost sugary. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2012
Very light nose. Very, very sweet palate. Boulangerie sweet. CO2 used to freshen. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2008
Sweet, nutty, slightly fizzy with some of Genevrières’ herbal notes. Correct and charming. Not cheap though. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2008
A bit green and gassy on the nose. Filled with CO2 for the tasting, apparently. Stewed apple. Impossible to judge. (JR)
Drink 0

Relatively bright, fresh and lively. Some cherry fruit but quite tough still. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2011
Sweet, slightly bitter. Very lively and racy. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2011

Good colour. Quite scented and fruity, with real grainy texture. Acidity oddly prominent. Strange balance. Matière, though. Morello cherries. (JR)

Drink 2007 – 2010
Correct nose, but too fat on the palate. No refreshment value. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2010
Some true Chablis character, but still not enough. Hot finish. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2012
Sweet and sleek. Not too fat. Quite lively, but no Côte d’Or savour. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2008
Cool and sleek nose. Pure flavours. Not especially rustic. Some cooking apple-skin character. Clean, but a bit too tense. Slightly astringent. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2008
Smoky, intense nose. Very introvert and pure. Needs time. Much less obviously ripe than some other Saint Romains. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2009
Some pears and ripeness on the nose. Rewarding fruit even now. Correct. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2009
Mineral side of Meursault on the nose. Great, broad weight of ripe fruit on the palate. A charmer. Lots kept in reserve. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2009
A little floral. Some really sleek fruit character. Texture. Far from opulent. Almost steely. Quite long. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2010
Full and broad. Some liquorice. Some lime cream. Lots of weight. Satisfying. Lots of impact and depth. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2012

A bit of alcohol obvious here. Too heavy. (JR)

Drink 2005 – 2007
Mont £102.00 ib
Quite tart and tough. Astringent. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2009

Very scented. Very fruited and round. But it lacks a little grand-cru intensity in the middle. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2015

Spice on the nose. Lots of fruit. Round. Surprisingly round. Very flattering and very rich with lots of personality. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2014
Slightly skinny nose. No great intensity of flavour. Quite dry finish. Bitter cherries. Strangely lacking in real concentration. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2010

Sweet and relatively charming. Lots of fresh fruit and definite structure. Dry spine. (JR)

Drink 2007 – 2014
Fresh and lively on the nose. Sweet and gentle. Exciting. Great balance. Sweetness and tension and balance. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2013
Full, coffee-bean aromas, then refreshing acidity. Quite lively and certainly very sweet. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2012
Very rich and liquorice scented. Sweet and round. Quite alcoholic, but the best vintage of this so far for me. Slightly astringent. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2010
Quite dangerously low acidity. Not expensive. Interesting experiment with minimal stabilisation but one feels that five minutes in the wrong cellar could spell disaster. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2006
Again, slightly cheesy (something to do with the particular oak used here?), though much denser than the village Pommard from this producer. Full, lively, quite punchy. Rather strange acidity. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2011
Pale, loose and light – and not even really pretty. A certain cheesy lack of freshness. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2010
New oak on the nose and much less vitality. A bit fat. Hot finish. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2007

Thick and dense with lots of lift and green vegetal flavour. A bit expensive. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2008

Quite clean and racy. Good, sleek stuff which should be very interesting in another year. (JR)

Drink 2005 – 2007
Lots of alcohol. Fat and sweet. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2006

Alcohol dominates. Big and not typical Chablis. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2010

Green and a bit fat. Not distinguished. Slightly oily. (JR)

Drink 2005 – 2008
Exceptionally deep crimson. Quite heady and raw, but very pronounced fruit on the palate. Still chewy, but lively and convincing. Bright fruit, though not subtle. (JR)
Drink 2009 – 2014
Mid crimson. Very slightly stewed fruit on the nose. There is better value lower down the range. I seek more freshness. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2014
Perfumed and relatively flirtatious. Lots of ripeness, but relatively gentle, too. Very serviceable restaurant wine. For a private cellar, you could probably find more personality. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2011
Very dark purple. Some liqueur and damp fur quality on the nose, but the fruit is surprisingly fresh on the palate. Quite winning. Good package. Slightly dry, but honest and good. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2010

Quite raw fruit. Quite a bit of acidity and gas. Definitely unformed. Not the confident bargain of most vintages. Rawness. Brutal. Not comfortable. (JR)

Drink 2007 – 2009
Hazelnuts and interest on the nose, but very heavy and fat – almost oily – on the palate. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2007
Creamy, but very, very opulent – almost New World. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2007

A bit loose and dull. Flabby. (JR)

Drink 2005 – 2006

Heavy and alcoholic. Hot. Soft acidity. (JR)

Drink 2005 – 2007

Too ripe and honeyed on the nose for refreshment. (JR)

Drink 2005 – 2006

Very fine and sweet. Sample a bit oxidized so impossible to rate. Chewy and thick. (JR)

Drink 0
Cask sample. Very dark. There is lots there, but it’s not the freshest sample that I’ve been offered. Fizzy with biodynamic life. Lots of microbugs in there. Very intense, very slightly stewed fruit nose. Lots of character certainly. Thick and quite dry. This may eventually push its way through to a graceful middle age. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2014

Deep crimson. Again, quite brutal primary aromas. A shortage of fruit on the front of the palate, then gripping tannins. May get there, but pretty uncomfortable to taste now. (JR)

Drink 2008 – 2012
Quite deep. Sweet, round and almost rude and crude on the nose. Tastes as though it was made with huge effort, but ultimately the results are not very comfortable to drink. Tannins a bit too obtrusive. Full marks for trying. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2008

Green and rather ordinary. Definitely not this useful domaine’s finest vintage. Alcoholic. (JR)

Drink 2005 – 2006

Deep crimson with a pale rim. Rather soupy nose. Lots of fruit hits the front palate and there is the real chew of dried fruit here. Certainly not elegant! Will Irancy ever be as thick and ripe again. No shortage of acidity though. Straightforward but short. (JR)

Drink 2005 – 2006
A little more obviously mineral than the Vaillons with a bit more race and nerve. Lots of density here and lots to chew on. Wait a while. Promising extract. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2012
Very alcoholic nose with a hint of filter pad? This strikes me as very heavy, astringent and old fashioned. The Chablis character has difficulty asserting itself through the flab. Short. (JR)
Drink 2004 – 2005
Much fresher than the 2003 with real zest on the nose. Some nice lime character but pretty tart and austere at the moment, Definitely wait! (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2010
Cask sample. A bit indistinct on the nose. A fruity start and quite winning, but a bit soft. Then quite tough oak tannins on the finish. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2012

Cask sample.

Rich and full and fruity. Very exotic and, at the moment, slightly fizzy. Smooth and heady. Engaging. A bit too oaked? (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2011
Good acidity. Lively. Quite flirtatious. Quite long and dense. But is it really burgundy? Pretty expensive for what it is. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2011
Floral nose. Very well-managed texture. Quite lively. Real punch. Just a bit sweet. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2009
Herbal, floral nose. Quite pleasant, with good substance. Quite tingly. Good. Real life here. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2009
Quite floral nose. Mid weight. Respectable, but dull. And this is expensive. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2010
Quite full and broad. Not more distinctive than La Garenne. Quite dense, but no lift. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2010
Some grapefruit flavours. Lime. A bit astringent on the palate. No fires lit on this palate. Serviceable. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2008

Slightly astringent nose of respectable, please-all Puligny, though without great excitement. Slight foot-dragging. Okay fruit-acid balance. (JR)

Drink 2005 – 2007
Lively, fresh and exciting, but not deep. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2007
Real freshness on the nose. Lots of fruit and race. Very much the best of these three. The fruit almost counterbalances the tannins. (JR)
Drink 2009 – 2016

Low-key nose. But very, very severe on the palate. Tannins overwhelm the fruit. I’d like to see this domaine in a better year. (JR)

Drink 2010 – 2015

Bright crimson – not especially deep. Quite fragrant. Quite chewy finish. Too exaggerated. Too chewy. Lots there. (JR)

Drink 2008 – 2011
Light crimson. Vegetal nose. Quite fresh. Nice, easy drink with refreshment, if not too expensive. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2007

Hot and sweet. No delineation. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2006

CS Quite pale with a certain cheesiness on the nose. Sweet, rich and only just enough acidity. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2012
Bright crimson. Lots of bright cherry fruit. Well-managed tannins. Not massive. Pretty good balance. Fresh, not overdone. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2016
Sweet, charming, broad and gorgeous. Most appealing. Scented and, again, more delicate than most at first. Real power underneath. Pretty tough tannins, but probably worth waiting. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2013
Not expensive but true, authentic (not a common term in 2003 tasting notes), relatively pale, aromatic and charming. Quite scented. Lots of fruit and great delicacy. Bravo! Correct, and it delivers. Quite powerful finish, but (just) not too hot. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2011
Light crimson. Round and fruity. Structure superimposed on some slightly fragile fruit. Sharp finish due to acidity. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2008

Powerful fruit on the nose, but a bit severe on the palate. Lots of tannin. It will never quite be in balance. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2007

Cask sample. Not quite fresh fruit. Broad hit of ripeness on the front of the palate, but with an edge of CO2. The matière here could be the vintage. (JR)

Drink 2008 – 2013
Cask sample.
Light nose. Lots of acidity. Quite tough and fizzy. Hollow. Stringy. Where’s the fruit? Quite hard finish. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2011
Deep crimson. Intense. Broad and sweet and glamorous. Suave fruit. Pretty low acidity, but very, very charming. A please-all wine for the short term. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2010
Cask sample. Very deep crimson. Not very fresh fruit on the nose. Almost more like a liqueur. Sweet, then dry and rich. Definitely more concentration and more successful than the Chevrets. Sweet finish. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2012
Cask sample.
Very dark. Old leaves and undergrowth on the nose. Sweet, broad and slightly fizzy. Slightly exaggerated cold soak mummification. More fruit than Clos des Angles. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2011
Cask sample.
Deep crimson. A bit mulchy on the nose. Quite intense. Sweet and taut as it hits the palate. A bit of cool tension on the finish. A bit dry and inky. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2012

Lemon, but fatter than usual. Not as nervy or exciting as usual. Okay, but not his finest vintage. (JR)

Drink 2007 – 2013

Rather odd nose – alcoholic and petrolly. Very, very hot. I’d like more acidity, please. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2010
Very light nose. Almost disappears in the mouth, though at least it has no jagged edges. Very, very light. Lots of fruit, but of a very, very simple, primary sort. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2012
Deep crimson. Very slightly stewed nose and lots of acidity. Not desperately successful, I think. Awkward and not enough density. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2011
Mid crimson. Rather pretty, light nose. Like a peck on the cheek from the vineyard, rather than a guiding hand. Very, very fruity. Nice drink, but not very Gevrey. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2010

Quite light crimson. Very light nose. Again, very simple, light fruit. I wouldn’t want to pay Nuits Saint Georges prices for this wine. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2009
Bright crimson. Very simple. Not 100% pure fruit on the nose, but lovely and gentle and easy on the palate. Good value, if well priced. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2007

Very deep crimson. Scented and alluring on the nose. Dramatic fruit, assuredly handled. Real texture. The fruit is sufficient for the tannins. Well done. (JR)

Drink 2007 – 2015
Dark cherry red. Full and quite opulent and seductive. Round and yet with some delicacy. Grippy tannins, but more obvious fruit than most Rions. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2013

Quite fresh, dynamic urgency, though the fruit is relatively simple. Very inky tannins just slightly too much. (JR)

Drink 2008 – 2012
Dark crimson. Slightly tired fruit on the nose. Lots of impact and quite round. A bit sweeter than usual. Inky tannins dominate the finish, though. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2010
Very fine and well made. Great integrity. Some molten honey character. Acidity well integrated. Great value for early drinking. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2006
Very, very deep colour. Lovely, deep, fruity fragrance. Fantastic. Great, great richness. Broad and sweet. Could drink now. Amazing price though. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2022
Quite high-toned, jewelly wine with lots of ballast. Sweet and dense. Some elegance. Awfully expensive but a good long-term bet. (JR)
Drink 2010 – 2020
Deep crimson. Thick and sweet and almost medicinal. Very, very dense. But it needs time. Set on one side. It’s all there, but still pretty severe. (JR)
Drink 2009 – 2018
Quite seductive and rich. Slight burnt quality. Lots of fruit. Very long and fine. Great concentration of fruit. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2015

Sweet, charming, lovely, entrancing Burgundy. Not especially typical 2003. Great structure. Real lift. (JR)

Drink 2007 – 2013
Very charming, fruity and well constituted. Lots of fruit over the tannins. Serious, ambitious package. with tannins there in abundance. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2013
Quite introvert for now with some almond character. Not quite the weight I would hope for, though a valiant attempt not to make something top-heavy. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2011
Hazelnuts on the nose. Slightly grainy texture but correct and suitably refreshing. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2008
Mid-crimson. Quite sweet and full and mellow. Very successful, if quite light – but then that’s Monthélie. Note of dryness on the finish, but good for current drinking. Acidic finish. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2007
Cask sample. Some green floral edge. Broad, almost flabby. Loose knit. Not a long-term bet. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2009
Hot, rather “furry” nose. Lots of ripe fruit. But very slightly dull. Hot finish. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2009

Very, very fruity and rather dull on the nose. Surprisingly simple. Cough medicine fruit. (JR)

Drink 2007 – 2012

CS Bright, deep crimson. Very, very sweet and round. More balanced than some, though not especially noble. Not too expensive. Spicy. Quite worthy but this desperately needs just a point more acidity to stop it being heavy and foot-dragging. Shame because some of the fruit quality is very appealing. For early drinking. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2010
Very clean and lively. Full, broad and successful. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2007

Pale red. Rather tired fruit. Sweet brambly notes. Not very typical red Burgundy. Round. CS (JR)

Drink 2007 – 2012
Spicy, very rich and concentrated. Rather impressive and gorgeous already. Lots of sumptuous fruit. Lots of richness. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2015
Very deep crimson. Slightly macerated bitter cherries on the nose together with some quite obvious oak. A bit disjointed. Very sweet, but a little bit short. (JR)
Drink 2009 – 2016
Mid-crimson. Very muted nose. Quite high acidity. Strong spine of tannin and not quite enough fruit intensity. (JR)
Drink 2009 – 2015
Not as captivating on the nose as the Chambolle-Musigny Fuées. A bit severe. Chewy and a bit awkward. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2014
Good crimson. Sweet and scented. Firm, with a very, very slightly dry note. But substantial and well handled. Would not disappoint. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2012
Cask sample. Scented and quite satin-textured. Real substance and great balance. Some sweetness, but sufficient acidity, too. Lively. Lovely. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2012
Nice, cool, fresh nose. Lively palate. Definitely one of his better wines. Spirited. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2012
True red Burgundy nose without exaggeration. Some real interest! Good lively fruit and an edge of bitter cherries. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2013
Cask sample.
Very, very deep colour. Slightly tired fruit on the nose and palate. Big and bold and lots of tannin. Not a winning combination. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2011

Spicy, fruity nose. Round. Serviceable. Definitely better than most negociant wines, but definitely worse than the better domaines. (JR)

Drink 2007 – 2011

Deep crimson. Lots of sap and fruit and roundness. Very flattering. Slightly dry finish. Pretty and easy. Not serious. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2009
Bright crimson. Very full, forward nose. Round and fruity, but not refreshing enough. Okay. Slightly New World. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2010
Bright crimson. Reasonably fresh nose. A bit astringent. Definitely tough finish. Not quite enough weight in the middle. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2009
Full and creamy and very odd. A bit out of balance. Sour. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2014
Full and round. Green apple skin on the finish. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2012
Relatively cool nose, but a bit fat on the palate. Some authentic race underneath. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2010
Quite alcoholic and soft. None of the spine of a grand cru. Some weight. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2012

Wet wool. Sulphidey nose. Too loose. Slightly astringent. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2010
Fully scented. Slightly floral. Lots there, but very little finesse. Hot. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2009

A bit of alcohol and wet wool on the nose. Heavy. Alcoholic finish. Ungainly. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2007
Bright crimson with a pale rim. Charming, but not very ambitiously concentrated on the nose. Lots of acidity and chew. Not quite enough fruit in the middle. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2010
Light crimson. Sweet and jammy, not especially Pommard, nose. Quite light and round. In the New World, I’d marvel at its purity. In Pommard 2003, I wonder why it is so light? (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2009
Slight honey. Not enough acidity. Wildly overpriced. An edge of ginger beer. It’s almost more like Pinot Gris! (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2009
Lively, readably transparent, though very sweet. Loose. Desperately needs more acidity and structure. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2008
Inexpressive and dull. Rather watery. Very flabby. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2008

Almonds on the nose. Creamy, floral and broad. Quite winning without being really nervy and exciting. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2009
Juicy, sweet and charming. A bit more astringent than Clos due Dessus des Marconnets on the palate. Lots there for the price, but not especially harmonious. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2009
Light red. Slightly world-weary aromas. Very light and fruity on the palate. Quite “pleasant” and not expensive. Light, though. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2007
A bit sulphidey. Very sweet and alcoholic. No grip. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2007
Very alcoholic and smudgy. Chewy. Cool Australia or New Zealand, please! (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2007
Slightly stinky, but trying hard. Just a bit too old-fashioned. Not pure enough. It has extract, though, and it’s not too flabby. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2007
Cask sample. A bit muddier on the nose at present than the Volnay. Some spice, even camphor. Sturdy, ambitious, long-term wine that tastes of Pommard! (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2015
Cask sample. Relatively restrained on the nose. Lovely fruit quality on the mid palate. Real lift and charm. Quite refreshing and no excess dryness. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2012
Cask sample. Quite haunting nose with real finesse, if still a very slight note of oak. Firm acidity on the finish. Charming, early drinker. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2007
Cask sample. Deeper flavours than Les Duresses. A little tougher, but still charming fruit and balance. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2009
Notes of cheesiness and veg on the nose – quite different from the Chambolle with more marked acidity. Real texture and race but still that amazing sweetness, plus a certain jewelly texture. Still quite light for a grand cru but clear and bright. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2013
Cask sample. Very heady yet clear, fleshy with fabulous topnotes. Lively, lots of fruit but it’s the nose that is its strongest suit. Some meat in the middle though not the flesh of some other years. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2012
Cask sample. Very powerfully fruity nose and bright colour. Extremely sweet and gentle – almost simple. Tannins hardly noticeable though the low acid is. Very charming if a little disconcertingly evolved. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2009
Lighter than the Nuits Saint Georges Chaignots at the moment. Very muted nose. Slightly fizzy. Surely a cask or tank sample. Difficult to read at present. (JR)
Drink 2009 – 2014
Very deep crimson. Very broad and thick and correct. Very, very slightly foot-dragging. More mass than ethereal. Chewy, but good fruit, too. (JR)
Drink 2009 – 2017
Good freshness. Rich and dense. Lively and fresh, yet with an undertow of quite complex, dense fruit. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2014
Cask sample. Very bright, dark crimson. Scented and lively. Very sweet and gentle. Intense, chewy fruit. Quite vibrant and long. Intense. Definitely 'masculine' when tasted straight after Mortet. Taut beginning, middle and finish. Really lively. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2012

Gentle, perfumed, round, and surprisingly forward. Quite satisfying and not out of balance. Deep crimson. Meaty, dense, rich. Lip-smacking. (JR)

Drink 2005 – 2008
Some autumnal notes. Lots of fruit intensity. Still chewy, but with a certain delicacy and perfume. Quite light. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2012
Bright crimson. Scented. Round. Gentle. Very easy and fruity, but perhaps that is the best way to play this vintage. Round. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2010
Quite light, healthy red. Rather big, burly, bruised fruit. Round and transparent. Not overambitious, nor overextracted. Sensitively made. Distinctively gentle. Tastes healthy. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2006
Floral. Overripe. Fat. Desperately in need of good corsetry. Quite intense, but hot. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2010
Round and fat and slithery. More concentration than the standard Chassagne-Montrachet, but not nearly enough excitement for the price. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2009
Nose not quite pure enough for me. Hot and fat. A real lack of acidity. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2007

Low-key nose. A bit fat and flabby. What is the point of this wine? Too sweet! Drink now. Hot finish. (JR)

Drink 2005 – 2006

Very sweet and jewelly. Very flattering. A little bit too sweet. But an honest effort. Not tarted up. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2009
More acidity, but still not especially focused or exciting. Lots of alcohol. Slightly chewy still. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2008
Stinky, sulphidey nose. Too flabby. Always a bad sign if the producer doesn’t present his wine. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2006

Oily, fat and alcoholic. Too loose. Horrid, actually. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2006

A bit hot. Sweaty nose. Lots of tannin. Brutal. Chewy. Very, very tough, though lots of effort and integrity! (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2007
Some interesting coffee-bean topnotes on an ultra-fruity base. His reds really are good, too. Smooth, powerful, and good value. Almost rude health! (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2009

Bright crimson. Straightforward fruity nose. Burly, big, solid hit of fruit for early drinking. Not subtle. (JR)

Drink 2005 – 2007
Sweet start. Round and full. Just a bit too obviously sweet, though a restaurant could list this today. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2006
Attractive mineral and liquorice notes on a base of very ripe, almost flabby, fruit. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2006

Clean, bright nose. Perfectly respectable if a little obviously alcoholic. (JR)

Drink 2005 – 2007

Light, floral nose. Quite charming and easy, if very slightly slack. But very, very user-friendly. Well done! (JR)

Drink 2005 – 2008
Charming, easy, sweet and round. Not fat. Just dead easy. Good example of a lesser appellation that benefits from extra ripeness. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2007

Deep crimson. Muddy nose. Some slightly sweet fruit on the front of the palate. Then pinched tannins. Does not charm or broadcast. (JR)

Drink 2008 – 2012
Low-key, marinated cherry flavours. Grainy tannins. A little hole in the middle. Very drying finish. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2011

Not much nose. Full and slightly fat. Some green streaks to enliven it, but far from fine. Still quite chewy. (JR)

Drink 2007 – 2010

Honeysuckle nose. Quite winning. Full and quite heavy. Well put together, but a bit astringent and not really exciting. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2009

Some lift. Quite lively. Floral honey. Quite fat. Needs more acidity. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2009
Very little nose and very little flavour. Low acidity. Where’s the wine? (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2009
Cask sample. Very deep crimson. Almost voluptuous and certainly intriguing and layered on the nose. Real power and stonking concentration. A certain silkiness, too. Very serious. Very, very fine and no hole anywhere in the experience. Lovely coverage of the palate. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2018
Cask sample. Bright crimson. Sweet, almost lolly notes on the nose at first, but then interesting, seductive layers emerge. Dense and yeoman-like on the nose. Again, extraordinarily sweet on the front of the palate, almost at the expense of freshness. Convincing. Sturdy. Quite masculine. Definitely Pommard. Quite fine tannins. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2016
Cask sample. Quite autumnal nose. Very, very sweet start, then lots of acidity. Very strange balance. Still slightly fizzy. Lots of spine. Still chewy. More structure than fruit at the moment. (JR)
Drink 0
Cask sample. Firm colour. Quite big and burly on the nose. Then marked acidity on the palate. Still quite firm and definitely grainy. No excess of flesh at the moment – may take it on. Some ink. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2015
Cask sample. Some chestnut and intrigue on the nose. Very fruity start – quite dramatic. Firm corset of structure, but fresh and lively. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2014
Cask sample. Quite deep crimson. Intense, ripe nose. Very full and round start to the palate. Quite fine, but more initial fruit than usual for de Montille. Firm. Spice. Ambitious. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2013

Deep colour. Powerful, very slightly rustic, aromas. Very, very sweetened and rather uncharacteristic. Almost raspberry cordial. Flattering. (JR)

Drink 2008 – 2015
This is a bit much for me. Even though it was picked on 18 August (all Le Moine’s wines were picked quite early) there seems to be a lack of freshness on the nose. It’s all a bit tarty and furry. Exaggerated. (JR)
Drink 2009 – 2014
Lighter and rubier than the Charmes. Flattering coffee bean aromas. Very lively and sweet. You just might be confused as to whether it was burgundy in a blind tasting. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2014
Cask sample. Extraordinary depth of colour. Very exotic. Liqueur burgundy! You would love or loathe this. Thick, sweet and flattering. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2011
Exceptionally rich and dense. (This is one of those wines into which carbon dioxide was fed over the lees.) Nerveux now, but it almost tastes as though it will stay like this rather than developing. Who can know? This is a very uncommon technique. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2010
Heady with the ripe smell that is just slightly reminiscent of old socks. Sweet and fruity, but not enough freshness for greatness or serious longevity. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2012
Rather jolly simple fruit. A good drink tonight! (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2007
Cool and, just, soft. Mineral. Quite good tang. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2007
Still taut but well balanced. Dense and much cleaner and purer than some previous Michelot offerings. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2010
Low-key nose. A bit dull and as though quite heavily sulphured. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2007

Spicy nose. Opulent and full yet very well-reined in. No flab. Lemon cream. A success. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2008

CS. Apple skin nose, as though skin-dominated. Very sweet start and lots of extract. Just very appley at the moment. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2010
Very exotic, opulent nose. Almost a burnt flavour. Just saved, but in the end a bit too severe. Too tough. (JR)
Drink 2009 – 2014

Sweet, rich, full and quite expressive. Full and relatively delicate. More gentle handling with real refreshment. Deep tingling finish. (JR)

Drink 2008 – 2013

CS. Green notes and minerals. Dense and quite thick. Concentrated, layered and quite interesting. Flattering. Well made. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2020

CS. Quite mineral nose. Quite racy. Definitely more to it than most of this range. Chewy. Lively. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2009

CS. Low-key nose. Exotic tropical fruit notes. Big and round. Very sweet. Aperitif? But just one glass. (JR)

Drink 2005 – 2008

CS. A bit of alcohol and a bit of oak on the nose. A bit loose. Sweet start. Reminds me of some Australian Chardonnays. Alcoholic finish. (JR)

Drink 2005 – 2007

Very low-key nose. Round. Low-acidity. Quite fat. Slightly floral. (JR)

Drink 2005 – 2007

Smoky. Hints at classic aromas. But basically big and fat. Just a bit more concentrated than the standard Meursault. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2008

Light nose. Almost New World fat, though with a nice lemony, savoury undertow. Good value for early drinking. (JR)

Drink 2005 – 2007

Rich and round and heavier. Thick and dense. Longer term. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2009
Lively, lacy and transparent. Again, with real life and lift. A bit heavier than the Chalumaux. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2008
Lemony, lively and vivacious. Well constituted. Lots of pleasure and definitely Burgundy. Long. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2009
Big and juicy. Great texture. Lively, but not worth the money. A bit hot on the finish. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2015

Cool and understated on the nose. Very sweet. Slightly loose, but not bad. Slightly hot finish. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2010
Bright fruit. Lots of energy. Quite confident with all the fruit hidden underneath. Really exciting. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2017
Much better acidity and balance than Frémiets or Champans. Better excitement and balance. Slightly dry, but this is really interesting wine. Much more like the ancient regime. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2013
Very deep crimson. Sappy, rather extraordinary, opulent nose. Rich and round and jewelly. Lots of exuberant fruit. Very sweet. Very unlike the old style. Slightly dry finish. Difficult for the new regime to be given this vintage as a debut. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2011
Very full and almost overripe. Low acidity. Oak is definitely there. Slightly furry. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2010
Cask sample. Quite deep crimson. Full, intense, and pruney. Lots of acidity and fruit. Thick and sweet. Medicinal. Oddly acidic. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2008
Stinky nose and hot and formless on the palate. Dull. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2009
No nose. Fat. Formless. Such low acidity. Far too expensive. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2007
Really rather fine and refreshing on the nose. Very comely and lively. A really lovely glass of ready Pinot. Not especially Burgundy. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2007
Quite deep crimson. Full and round on the nose. Unaccustomed ripeness. Very smooth and seamless. No great freshness, but much riper than usual. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2006
Appley and quite tight. Lots of fruit and vivacity. A bit light, but respectable. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2008
Bright crimson. Sweet and fragrant, but not especially complex. Lots of bright, charming fruit, if very, very little acid. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2010

A bit inexpressive on the nose, then lots of concentrated, if slightly brutal, fruit. Not expensive, but not especially fine. I’d like to see another vintage. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2010

Dark crimson. Rather exaggerated nose. Not delicate. Big and bumptious. Lots of bang for the buck, but I’m not sure it will age gracefully. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2010
Deep crimson and very thick, rather heavy, chunky fruit. Very heavy and baked. Stodgy. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2009

More fragrant than the Chaillots below. Slightly treacly nose with a little cheesiness but some real life and vivacity compared to the Chaillots. Very chewy end suggests it might be best to wait awhile before attacking this wine. Rather dry finish. (JR)

Drink 2007 – 2012
Very dark crimson. Mushrooms and truffles on the nose already! Rather winning (not as porty and heavy as the Vignes Franches) although it seems more marked by the vintage than by the appellation. Big, and bold. and assertive. A very wide girth this one has. Slightly disconcerting coconut note on the nose as though the oak is not 100% classic. Already very round and fruity – and alcoholic. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2010

Bright crimson. Quite lively, fresh nose with rather more appellation expression than some. Good balance. No evidence of sweetness or dried grape quality – apart from some slightly dry tannins on the finish. Honest, true, transparent and a very pleasing drink even if without any enormous subtlety. Not big but harmonious. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2009

Very dark brownish crimson with a pale rim. Sweet, cheesy nose. Very big, bold and porty! Again, there seems to be some residual sugar in this wine. Burgundy but not as we know it today. Extraordinary. Those who hanker after the old Berry Bros bottlings of the 1960s and early 1970s might love this – Doudet Naudin style. And why not? But I have marked it according to my own personal taste for fresher, more delineated burgundy. Dry finish again. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2010
Light crimson with a hint of purple. Muddy nose – nothing very clear and distinct about it. Also a bit soupy and unexpectedly sweet on the palate. Dry tannins close in on the finish. Rather austere in structure and that candied sweetness is a bit odd. Dry finish. Certainly not classic!< (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2009
Deep crimson. Relatively evolved nose with unusually attractive freshness for a 2003. Now this seems to have some race and soul. Lively without much raisin character. Relatively simple but a good wine for early drinking. Just a little tannic still. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2008

Mid healthy crimson. Sweet cloud of boiled sweet aromas plus something a little woody. Quite good attack but no real soul. Mid weight, quite chewy. Alcohol notable on the finish. Hot. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2008
Mid crimson (much paler than the Irancy). Some autumnal mulch on the nose and lots of acidity and tannin on the palate. Very little charm! Austere, tart finish. Dries the palate at the end. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2006

Much more nerve and excitement on the nose than the Corton-Charlemagne. Weight, opulence and (relative) excitement – though not truly, truly thrilling. This certainly has weight – and 14% alcohol like the Corton-Charlemagne. There’s a certain tension in the undercurrent. Remarkably open though for a grand cru of less than two years old. Tingle of life but arguably middle-aged before its time. (JR)

14%
Drink 2005 – 2012

This wine was a bit reduced on the nose when I tasted it. Certainly there is no grand cru glamour at the moment – just lots of alcohol but not an enormous amount of flavour or excitement. Edge of filter pad? Not nearly as exciting as the 2002 currently stocked by Majestic with its telltale almond note. We must hope that it grows into greatness. Still quite astringent. Alcohol but not remarkable depth. Just sweet and simple at the moment. (JR)

14%
Drink 2008 – 2014
Very light nose. Sweet and muscular. No real distinction at the moment but perhaps it’s just brooding? Too sweet on the finish for my palate – not exciting or nervy enough. But let’s hope it will grow into being a more intriguing wine. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2011

Gold. Real personality. A bit of oak and a bit of sulphides but there is fruit here that sparkles and some lemon cream character that distinguishes it from an oaked Chardonnay from anyway. Some savour and attack. Grainy texture. Density and life. Still very slightly chewy. Good acidity – a green streak, tant mieux. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2010
Deep gold with no hint of green. Very lightly smoky nose. Heavy, alcoholic, a bit loose and formless. Water and alcohol in the ascendant to the detriment of flavour and extract. Very hot finish. (JR)
Drink 2005
Attractive lemony raciness, and a little oak, on the nose. Quite full bodied and opulent with a green creamy streak. Not bad. Not that much individuality but very competent. Certainly serviceable. Quite long. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2007
Not very clearly Chablis on the nose – quite fat on the palate. Sweet start – oddly lacking in green fruit or wet stone flavours for a Chablis but a perfectly serviceable drink. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2007

Again, quite deep gold. A bit more freshness than the wine above on the nose. But awfully dull and hot on the palate. Very difficult to justify the price. Other vintages have had more clarity and fruit. Very short. (JR)

Drink 2005
Quite dark gold. Simple. open nose. Some slightly underripe(!) notes on the palate – difficult to see how this could be in 2003! very short and slightly astringent without much delightful fruit character in the middle. If this were behind a supermarket’s own label rather than one of Louis Latour’s super-elegant ones, you wouldn’t give it a second thought. (JR)
Drink 2005
Definitely the best Laroche. Here is real Chablis character on the nose – though oddly sweet and flabby on the palate. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2014
Ripe pear flavours. Very odd. I’d hate this blind. Too soft. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2012
Full spread on the palate. Not much nerve. Very atypical. Almost fat! (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2010
Cool, but slightly filter paddy on the nose. Lacks real nerve. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2008
Very deep crimson. Sweet, slightly low-key nose. Lots of fruit and charm if not the most refreshing wine. Quite dry tannins on the finish. Lots of personality. Not expensive. Truly an exceptional wine in the context of St-Aubin. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2010
Tension. Lively. Quite round and, just, enough acidity. Lots of substance. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2010

Dense and dry. Lots of intensity. Sweet start. Quite satiny texture. (JR)

Drink 2007 – 2010
Full and broad at first, but ultimately rather watery. No great concentration of flavour. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2008
Interesting life and liquorice on the nose. Ripe pears. Broadcasts life. Fairly sweet, but rewarding as an inexpensive, ready white Saint Aubin. Another of those Saint Aubins with unaccustomed ripeness, and liveliness, too. Real nerve and still slightly astringent on the finish. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2007
Cask sample. Bright, deep crimson. Low key, but relatively complex nose and lots there on the palate. Teenage, but should get there. Sweet, round, and fruity. Oak a little too prominent? Lots of fruit in there. Excellent tannin management, but is there something just a little overworked about this? (JR)
Drink 2009 – 2017
Cask sample.
Something interesting on the nose. Chestnuts? Very sweet fruit at the start of the palate. Quite a distinctive wine with lots of pleasure to offer. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2012
Ah – not yet bottled! This sample seemed quite heavily sulphured. Too much so to taste. I’m surprised this is not yet in bottle. Alcoholic finish. Impossible to judge at this stage. (JR)
Drink 0

Cask sample.
Quite powerful and dense. Marked, rather strange, oak. Very powerful and distinctive. Thick and round. Delivers! (JR)

Drink 0
Dark, healthy crimson. Very light nose. Sweet, gentle palate entry. Quite marked fruit impact. Fine tannin quality, though I wonder about the acidity. A good mouthful. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2010

Lack of freshness on the nose then rather raw, crude fruit. Thick, sweet, heavily extracted with very obvious acidity. (JR)

Drink 2010 – 2015
A bit stale on the nose then it lacked brightness and acidity. Rather tired fruit. Strung out. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2012
Very little nose. Soft and round. Not enough structure or acidity. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2009
Quite fine and delicate, with good acidity. Chewy. Needs a bit of time. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2011

Deep crimson. Slightly stewed nose. Very chewy. Correct for conventional Pommard in terms of ageing potential, but still a long way to go before it charms. (JR)
Drink 2010 – 2014

Nutty nose, but not enough substance. Loose. Round. Some green streaks and layers. (JR)

Drink 2008 – 2017
Cask sample. Quite an alcoholic nose. A bit heavy and flabby on the palate. So sweet! Substance, but not much flavour – like so many wines, of both colours, produced from very hot summers. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2012
Cask sample. Scented, lively and herbal. Some vegetal character. Chewy. Real vivacity. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2013
Cask sample. Hazelnut nose. Round, satin texture. Some graininess. Dense. A bit chewy. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2012

Quite lively. Good acidity. Refreshing. Some green notes, but a hard finish. (JR)

Drink 2008 – 2011

Lots of nerve and liquorice. Astringent finish. Hot finish. (JR)

Drink 2008 – 2010
Lively, round and sweet. Some lemon-strepsil character. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2014

Herbal, round and satin-textured. Deep and dense. Chewy. Pretty good for a white 2003. (JR)

Drink 2008 – 2013
Cask sample. Full and dense. Honeysuckle. Quite opulent. Long, with toffee notes. Some toast. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2012

Cask sample.
Heavy nose with some liquorice notes. The satin texture appeals, and it has a bit more acidity than some. Round. Pretty masterful. Quite long. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2011
Cask sample. Thick, not refreshing. Honey. Heavy even. Acidity please! (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2011
Cask sample. Opaque on the nose. Definitely dense, but not enough purity. Something to get your teeth into, but all texture as opposed to refreshment. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2010

Cask sample.
Slight wet wool on the nose. Dense. Good matière, but too convoluted to appeal. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2008
Quite deep crimson. Rather more harmonious than the Morey Vieilles Vignes or the Gevrey-Chambertin. Not 100% fresh fruit on the nose, though no shortage of acidity on the palate. A bit awkward at this stage. Still lots of oak in evidence. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2012
A bit purer than the Morey Vieilles Vignes. Good rich fruit, though very obvious acidity and tannin. Not a pleasure to drink at this stage. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2010
Cask sample.
Purplish crimson. Very exotic with opulently toasted oak. Lots of dramatic fruit and alcohol. Quite an impact. Slightly overoaked. Good value for fans of this style. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2010

Floral, vegetal nose. Lovely texture and slightly denser than the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune. Both are admirably and unusually ripe even for this producer, the king of the Hautes-Côtes. (JR)
Drink 0

Quite creamy and rich on the nose. Very delicious, if slightly sweet, for early drinking. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2007
Very full and mineral on the nose. Fat and very sweet. Too much. Too sweet. Too honeyed. Quite astringent still. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2012
A lovely, ambitious, tense, dense cocktail of soil and fruit. Racy, but just slightly slacker than perfection. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2011
Real vibrating character. Lively green fruits. Tense. Very unlike typical 2003 Meursaults. Just a slight lack of race. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2009
Chewy, grainy and honest, but not fine or sleek. Correct and not too sweet. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2007

Lightish crimson. Lively, relatively tense for a 2003 red burgundy, almost as though it has been acidified. A bit mean and unyielding at present. Pretty sulky. Some core of bitter cherry fruit. (JR)

Drink 2009 – 2015
The nose is still a bit raw. Lots of quite grainy tannins but quite supple and fine on the palate. Just a note of dried fruits on the finish. Still quite hard work. I may well be underestimating this. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2015
Cask sample.
Surprisingly light in colour for a 2003. Lovely supple integrity on the palate. Almost fully formed and ready! Spooky! A delicious drink already. Round and charming though not the most intense. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2010
Cask sample. Very deep crimson. Extremely embryonic compared to the wines above. Lots of matière – very impressive, but still surly. Not sweet like so many wines above, just dense and brooding and convincing. Dry notes on the finish seem to come more from the barrel than raisined grapes (?) (JR)
Drink 2010 – 2018
Interesting velvety, nutty nose. Pretty severely dried fruit on the palate. Best option is surely to wait out those tannins though it’s impossible to say whether the fruit will hang around long enough. (JR)
Drink

Very deep colour for the appellation. Sweet, broad and slightly jammy with quite marked tannins. Chewy finish. May never have quite enough fruit on the mid palate though it certainly was not made from underripe grapes. (JR)

Drink 2007 – 2010
Very firm deep crimson. Something distinctly, and distinctively, mossy and vegetal about this nose. Really very majestic and round. Extraordinarily developed but very satisfying. Long and already quite complex. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2012
Light, perfumed nose and then dried fruit characters on the palate. Not especially harmonious but this could well come right. Relatively racy and sleek. Still a little dry on the finish. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2014
Cask sample.
Deep crimson. Possibly the most powerful nose I have ever come across on a Pernand! Very fruity with some oak – in another year you might find these sort of flavours and depth on a Pommard! Very juicy and attractive. Round and ripe and almost supple – just a slight note of dried fruit. Relatively succulent for the vintage. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2012

Cask sample.

Deep crimson and powerful ripe nose. Extremely “sweet” on the nose with some dried fruit flavours rather than fresh fruit flavours and no shortage of tannin. Very big and certainly not classic. Needs time. Very dry tannins on the finish. (JR)

Drink 2008 – 2013
Noticeably leaner and racier than the Batard but still not that clearly defined. For the moment this is just a big mass of ripe fruit, with decent acidity. An edge of coffee bean and some interest but I have to take the potential on trust at this stage. Good balance of acidity though. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2016

Very full, almost oily (not a common tasting note for white burgundy). Rich and round and satiny. Lots of concentration and alcohol but, as yet, very little flavour. A big, bold thing but I think in this vintage being super-ripe does not carry the premium it does in other, less naturally ripe, vintages. For my money I’d go for two bottles of the Chassagne Clos de la Chapelle. (JR)

Drink 2008 – 2015
Monopole. Some green highlights in the aroma but lots and lots of alcohol on the palate. Still very unknit and unformed. The acidity seems reasonably integrated but certainly not excessive. This needs a bit more time than most. Some nutty character. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2012
Within the context of appellation and vintage, this is almost austere! Full and round and full blown without being particularly complex. Quite a hot finish, but a lovely texture. Just a bit stolid. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2009
Florally scented on a deep undertow of ripe fruit. Exceedingly winning for the short term if almost New World in its slightly blowsy appeal. Lime and glucose. But enough acidity overall. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2007
Quite intense and intriguing nose with some green fruit ripeness and the acidity much better integrated than in the Santenay above. A bit of astringence on the finish but really quite an impressive package. Quite nerveux. Grainy, appetizing texture. Quite pretty for the vintage. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2008
Hot, alcoholic nose gives way to great intense, ripe, almost tropical fruit flavours and then quite searing acidity. Certainly much bigger and bolder style of wine than average. Should provide short-term pleasure, though certainly not complex. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2007
Lots of work on the oak used! Sweet start. Not classic but quite seductive. (JR)
Drink 2009 – 2014

Rude, raw fruit on the nose. Quite fresh, then quite bright, heartening fruit on the palate. (JR)

Drink 0
Mid-crimson. Sweet, cherry flavour. Not totally pure aromas. But very flattering and sweet fruit on the palate. Very fresh and ripe. Some life and dryness on the finish. Good breadth. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2010

Sweet and nutty on the nose, then still quite taut on the palate. Needs time. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2009

Quite exotic. Full and rich, but with lovely texture. Round and sleek. Very exotic. Almost tropical fruits but will repay keeping. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2008

Some green fruit flavours. Some chew. Introvert. Lovely, please-all wine. How could anyone object to this? (JR)

Drink 2005 – 2008
Sophisticated for the price. Very fine, focussed, sleek, top-quality nose. Much riper than usual, but definitely a cut above most at this price. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2007
Cask sample.
A bit fresher than the Gevrey-Chambertin. Lively and punchy with good acidity as well as fruit. A little tannin on the finish. Very charming. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2010
Cask sample.
Not especially deep. Slightly stewed and rhubarby on the nose. Round and fruity. Easy. A little slack, but pleasant. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2009

Lean, lemony nose. Quite fine, and no excessive 2003 characters. Well balanced and refreshing. This may be thanks to added acid, but the overall result is very pleasing. (JR)

Drink 2005 – 2008
Scented, but with a weary sigh rather than a breath of fresh air. Lively acidity and definite fruit weight. Much more successful than the Echézeaux. Dense but not fine. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2015
As with the Aux Réas, there is a certain cheesy weariness on the nose. Some brightness on the palate, but still the fruit is not fresh enough for the price. Lots of weight and tannin. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2012

Quite thick and heavily scented on the nose. Animal fur? Relatively lightweight on the palate. Fruit not the freshest. Something a bit tired about this. CS (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2008

Light, but perfectly formed, on the nose. Lots of charming fruit on the palate. No great length or apparent potential, though. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2008

Cask sample.
Dark crimson. Relatively light, but harmonious, on the nose. Fruity, round, and well balanced, but pretty simple. (JR)

Drink 2005 – 2007

Full and broad and dramatic and sweet. No great concentration. Slightly astringent. More acidity please. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2007

Very, very deep crimson. Strong perfume and a wonderful spread of fruit across the palate. Very chewy, but I think it will get there in the end – there is certainly enough of a core and lots going on in its not-entirely-evident-yet depths. (JR)

Drink 2012 – 2022

Very, very deep. Intense. Quite painful and exaggerated. A broad nose and lots of intensity on the palate. Definite bite. Needs ages. Such harsh tannins. I preferred his 2002s. (JR)

Drink 2012 – 2022
Cask sample.
Very deep crimson. A certain green note, as though there are some leaves in here. Then pretty uncompromising tannins. Very, very inky finish. (JR)
Drink 2010 – 2020
Deep, concentrated crimson. Slight cheesiness. Really fruity and lively and rich. Tannins well hidden. Chewy, but convincing. (JR)
Drink 2009 – 2017
Cask sample. Quite opulent, almost exotic, fruit. Extremely sweet palate entry, then extremely severe tannins. This will be a bottle worth watching. (JR)
Drink 2010 – 2020
Deep crimson. Concentrated and – for Grivot prices – charming on the nose. Lots of ripe cherry flavours. Very soft and fruity. Really different from the rest of the Grivots. Very, very ripe. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2013
Deep crimson. Very lively and brutal on the nose. Sweet start. Really does taste wild. Uncompromising and very youthful. Quite “wild” tasting. Lots of fruit and nature in the glass. But very firm tannins. In this case, the wine is very lively, so will probably be okay. (JR)
Drink 2009 – 2016
Cask sample. Deep crimson. Sweet, spicy nose. Definitely 'cool' on the front of the palate. Very restrained. Correct. A beginning, middle, and end. No excesses. This tastes as though the vines are very old and very comfortable. Assured, but will this take on weight? Definitely a bit sullen at the moment. (JR)
Drink 2009 – 2015
Cask sample. Monopole. Dark crimson. Very, very lively and tense and dense. Dry tannins on the finish. Lots of extract here. (JR)
Drink 2009 – 2015

Not much nose. Definite density, but it sure is under wraps for the moment. (JR)

Drink 2007 – 2010
Lovely seductive nose. Perfumed, sweet, rich with good, integrated acidity too. Silky, mouthfilling (the only 2003 I have written this word about!). Lots to chew on but great ripe tannins. It has masses of alcohol but hides it well. No hot finish. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2017
Quite deep crimson. Sweet and tight at the moment. Chewy tannins but lots of excitement and energy. Vivacious. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2012
Bit of savoury oak and some oak tannins. Lively and savoury – very attractive fruit thought. Transparent. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2010
Lively, creamy, aromatic. Really racy. The acidity is quite marked here. Not very deep – a bit hollow. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2012
Juicy sweet, round, almost coffee flavoured. Slightly dry finish but good balance overall. Crunchy, from a vineyard very close to Pommard. Quite long. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2012
Quite bright crimson. Full, quite opulent nose. But not the intensity of a grand cru. Competent, but not desperately exciting. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2013

Bright crimson. Pointu, sharp and directed, cool nose. Lots of fruit on the front of the palate. Very charming. The spread across the palate is impressive. Chewy finish, but not excessively so. Very lively. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2011
Very purple. Quite a sweet start and then a bit pinched. Very chewy. “Cool” finish. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2010
Deep crimson. Very definitely cool fermented. Not a flattering, broad spread of flavours. Pinched. Not expensive. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2010
Very, very deep crimson. Round and very, very fruity. Not especially intense. A bit simple. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2009
Quite fat. Hidden nose which took time to emerge. Some grainy texture. Definitely alcoholic, slightly astringent, not fine but there is obviously more buried in here than in either of the two wines above. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2008
Deep lemon cream flavours. Quite soft. Pleasant short-term drink but the rest of the world has been catching up on this style. Again, the acidity seemed to stick out on the palate, especially on the finish. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2007
Light, florally scented. Correct, if far from opulent. Very well managed and balanced and not desperately expensive. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2008
Quite minty on the broad, ample nose. Tastes as though there may well have been quite a bit of added acid. Good smooth texture but little that is definitively burgundian. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2006
Deep crimson. Very fresh nose. Lots of fruit and roundness. Much broader than most Marsannays. Slightly pinched finish. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2007
Lots of fruit. Great whack of flattering fruit on the nose. A very slightly spindlier version on the palate. Quite a bit of gas – too much to make evaluations fair. Not expensive, though. Slightly drying tannins on the finish. (JR)
Drink 0
Full and unusually ripe, but a bit brutal. Quite hard and severe. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2010
Very spicy. Lots of fruit. Very ripe and broad array of flavours. Friendly. Slightly dry finish. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2009
Lots of fruit. Lively cherries. Real life. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2008
Quite vibrant, fruity red. Lots there, humming away. No excess of tannin. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2006
Cask sample. Quite pale. Lightweight nose. Pretty. Good delicacy and real lift. Not big, but very juicy and well balanced. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2009
Cask sample. Quite dense and thick, with substance and a bit of life. For the vintage, this truly dances. And edge of iron. Long. Just needs a tad more acidity. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2012
Cask sample.
Savour, but not much nose. Round. Green vegetal notes and molten honey. Pretty good. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2010
Relatively racy. Sweet and dense. Quite floral. Some spine, but not very, very exciting. (JR)
Drink 0
Light and simple (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2006

Rich, intense fruit that just about swamps the tannins. Now I understand why a merchant would persist with this range in 2003. (JR)

Drink 2008 – 2014
Very concentrated and tingly on the nose. Round and quite smooth fruit. Sweet and charming. Acidity dangerously low. Overoaked? (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2011

Dark crimson. Fruit almost submerges the tannins, but, alas, not quite. Still out of balance. (JR)

Drink 2010 – 2015

Quite lively. Good attack. Great acidity. Some real chew. Very dry tannins on the finish. Too tough. Inky. Oak soak. No! (JR)

Drink 2008 – 2012

Very rich and pure and spicy. Tough and dense and just too tannic. Out of balance. (JR)

Drink 2009 – 2012
A hint of wet fur on the nose. A bit more freshness please! Drink immediately … though tannins insist at the finish. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2008
Very, very sweet and rich. A green spine, but no savour. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2010

Correct, sweet, alcoholic, and honeyed, but with some texture and structure. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2009
A little tension. Some honey. Better than many. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2007

Cooler, more restrained than Morgeot. Some finesse and real density. (JR)

Drink 2007 – 2013
Quite full and spicy. Big and rewarding, though it lacks a little note of success. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2014
Slightly heavy. Fat nose. Lots of chew. Ambitious wine. Quite vibrating and interesting. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2015

Quite sleek, but severe. Good texture, but quite dry. Still quite chewy. (JR)

Drink 2007 – 2011
Some tingle and tension, but not enough. Very sweet and soft. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2008
Some tension, but not too much. Could be New World. Heavy. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2007
Lots of alcohol and not much definition. A bit livelier and cleaner than some vintages, though. Loose. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2006

Bright crimson. A bit severe. Definitely dry and a bit too drying. (JR)

Drink 2008 – 2011

Cask sample
Thick and sweet and fresh. Lots of very, very honest matière here. I’d bet on this making it. Great balance and structure. (JR)

Drink 2007 – 2015

Full, sweet, but slightly tired fruit – though this may simply be the sample. Thick and furry. I think on balance I prefer the Hudelot-Noëllat. (JR)

Drink 2008 – 2011

Cask sample
Real freshness and attack on both the nose and palate. Some real punch. (JR)

Drink 2007 – 2012

CS. Sample a bit tired on the nose. A little skinny and lacking freshness on the palate. (JR)

Drink 2007 – 2010

A good mouthful of fruit. Light and delicious. Much better than the Bourgogne Rouge. A bit light, but true. Cooler vineyards? (JR)

Drink 2005 – 2006
Light, slightly muddy crimson. Light and sweet and not especially refreshing. Long. Hot finish. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2006
Light and slightly baked. Sweet and easy. For drinking soon. Odd acidity. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2007
Hazelnut meringue and lime. This may become very graceful in middle age. Still slightly astringent. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2009

Fat, ripe and great for Sonoma. Whether one really wants to invest in this sort of quick hit Burgundy is open to question. (JR)

Drink 2005 – 2007

Deep and very, very healthy red. Very dense and thick. So sweet and gorgeous! The first 2003 that I have had difficulty spitting. Real power. Real fruit. Lots of very, very ripe tannins underneath. Quite alcoholic. (JR)

Drink 2008 – 2018
Very deep crimson. Very slight hint of cheesiness on the nose. But very opulent, seductive, sweet, raspberry fruit on the palate. Sweet, round and winning though no excess of acidity… Perhaps the oak is slightly too dominant at this stage. Very engaging though. Good structure. Very glamorous. Long. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2014
Sweet and thick. Masses of sweet, ripe flavours. Not much acidity. Ready to drink now. Very, very round. Lovely harmony. Very ripe, gentle, round and juicy. Long with layers – unusual at this stage in 2003. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2010
Very, very big and rich. Great density. Not a very long-term wine. A risky wine, but still obviously throbbing with life. Definitely worth the money. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2015
Mineral scent. Quite big. Tingly and lively. Should get there. Real density. Some astringence. Deep and mouthfilling. Very intense, yet entrancing. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2012
Dense and thick. Real intensity. Approaching grand cru quality, or at least grand cru 2003 quality. Quite fine and delicate and dancing. Quite a different texture to the standard Meursault and Les Gruyaches. Quite crunchy. Needs time. Dry and savoury – unlike so many 2003 whites. Bravo! (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2012
Relatively mineral and sleek. Very easy to like. Again, great texture. Lemon oil, but light and discrete. Slightly tough on the finish. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2009
Savoury, sappy, quite exciting nose. Read tension here. Tingly and round and rich and satiny. Full and round. Toasty. Chewy finish. Vivacious! (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2010
Rich and creamy. Proper Meursault. A good corset of acidity. Green and cream. Quite classic and exciting. Lovely, silky texture. Bravo! Quite open, though. Don’t keep. Sweetish. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2008
Very, very rich and concentrated. Thick and dense, but true. Definitely Burgundy, not New World Chardonnay. Spice and fruit. Integrity and excitement. Very round. Great texture, even at this price. Long. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2006
Some classic 'fume' with concentration of fruit and real structure, but still awkward. Pretty massive. The label notes just 13%, but it tastes more. (JR) 13%
Drink 2009 – 2015
Restrained, pebbly, flowery nose. A little low in acidity. Still some hint of astringence. Slightly hot finish. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2012
An edge of molten honey on nervy, tingling green-fruit Chablis. A little fat for classic Chablis perhaps, though very user-friendly in the medium term. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2012
Exciting combination of intensity, exuberance and nerve. Well done! Already quite open. My only concern is whether this is a long-term wine. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2010
Still very youthful and introvert, but there is intensity here. A real creamy concentration. A spine of green vegetation. All the ingredients are here. Very long. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2012
Reserved nose. Currently inexpressive. Some heat. Not sure at this stage. Some astringence. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2010
Very intense. Some classic wet-stone notes. Still a bit astringent, but there is really concentrated fruit here. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2011
Green, vegetal nose. Again big and powerful. Lots on concentration. May lose its puppy fat. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2010
Muted, hidden nose. Big, almost nutty. More like Côte d’Or than Chablis. Quite a satisfying drink, but as a Chablis only a 15. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2008
Green fruits – lime? – on the nose. Some creaminess of texture. Quite painful. Almost hot on the finish. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2009
Some exciting mineral tingle on the nose. Some true Chablis character – rare! High acidity and some astringence. Definitely chewy. Possibly too chewy? (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2010
Powerful, almost “heavy” nose. Slightly floral. Sweet start. Competent attack, but big rather than classic. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2006

Lively, quite fresh nose. Good refreshment value. Still very youthful and taut. Needs lots of time. Correct. (JR)

Drink 2008 – 2015
Bright crimson. A bit tired on the nose. Sweet, but oddly dull compared to the Ruchottes. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2015
Lovely and most unusual in 2003. Coffee-bean aroma. Nice balance of fruit and acidity. Some vegetal character, and tannins kept well under control. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2014
Smells like proper red Burgundy. Lovely satiny texture, yet the tannins are there, too. Well managed up front, even if some pretty fierce tannins insist on the finish. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2013
Sweet start. Quite winning. Needs time, but there is lift and not ultra-harsh dry tannins. I can see fruit. Quite light, though. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2011

Exciting, deep, nuanced. Fresh and not too sweet or tannic. Lots of fruit. Dry finish. (JR)

Drink 2007 – 2011
Only mid crimson. Fully exotic, round and charming. Not a great core of fruit in the middle. Slightly more vegetal than usual. A bit more restrained than Les Brûlées on the nose, then a great whack of ripe fruit on the palate. Very impressive. Pretty fierce tannins, but the fruit is good. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2016
Slightly exaggerated toasty oak on the nose. Lots of acidity and fruit on the palate. A bit grainy, even sandy, on the palate. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2013
Cask sample. Scented, sweet nose with lots of fruit. Still quite unevolved. Lots of acidity. Only half formed. About another sample I wrote: Very rich and attractive and flattering. A round and wonderful spread of ripe fruit. Bravo! But I scored both highly. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2014
Mid-crimson. Quite interesting flavours and raciness. Round and very, very fruity. Not self-conscious about being slightly light. Confident, juicy red Burgundy. Very, very juicy. Actually, almost like top Moulin-à-Vent (which would be cheaper). Great drink though. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2011
Full, round, and rather seductive. Spreads over the palate, but ultimately a bit too simple for the price. Fine, but… (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2017

Sweet, slightly soupy nose. Could do with more freshness and less stringiness of texture. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2009
Very deep crimson. Exceptionally ripe and just possibly dangerously unstable but certainly very dramatic, extremely glamorous and sweet. Rather muddy nose, but lots of ripe fruit and a certain silkiness offsets a potentially drying finish. Quite impressive, but not a coup de coeur. Solid. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2013

Dark crimson, sweet and rather heavy. Dense. (JR)

Drink 2007 – 2010

Mid crimson. Good scent and acid, though, amazingly for this vintage – actually too tart! And a bit too obviously oaky to boot. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2007
Quite mossy nose. Mulch flavours. Then massive, almost cloying, sweetness on the palate. Too little acidity and too obvious tannins. (JR)
Drink 2009 – 2014

Very dark. Lots of rich fruit and spice. Again, tannins are dominated by ripe fruit, until the end anyway. (JR)

Drink 2007 – 2015
Scented. Relatively juicy. Very impressive tannin management (or disappearance). Round and sweet. Perhaps could do with slightly more acidity, but good. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2011

Full, round, reasonably chunky but just slightly too sweet. (JR)

Drink 2008 – 2012
Quite chewy and severe with a notably dry finish. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2009

Broad and lemony. Could do with just a touch more concentration, but perfectly respectable. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2007

Lovely flirtatious scent on top of fabulous breadth of ripe fruit. Still very youthful, but with good, refreshing qualities. Dry finish. Needs lots of time. (JR)

Drink 2009 – 2020
Not quite as concentrated as the Bonnes Mares, though with lots of layers and a superfluity of ripe fruit. Quite severe on the finish. (JR)
Drink 2009 – 2016
Really interesting, entrancing nose. Lots of fruit, but real stature and structure, too. Racy, yet deep flavoured. Great freshness of fruit. Intriguingly autumnal, but not burnt or stewed. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2018
Cask sample. Bright crimson. Dark and rich. Dry (as opposed to sweet) finish, but there is a confidence about these wines. Bravo! (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2015
Vibrant mouthful of morello cherry fruit. Good balance of fruit and tannin, and some refreshment factor. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2012
Dark crimson. Some quite lively, cherry scent. Punchy. Quite vibrant. Quite dark and vibrant, but respectable, especially for the money. Tannins just this side of too dry. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2010
More vegetal and meaty on the nose. Lovely top notes of mocha, too. Very rich, and some obviously thick skins, too. Needs lots of time. A real mouthful. (JR)
Drink 2008 – 2018

Quite deep for a Drouhin red. Full, very ripe nose. So unlike the usual Domaine Drouhin style. Almost rudely sweet. Something quite raw and unformed. Big! Some acidity and tannin. (JR)

Drink 2007 – 2011

Very, very cool. Sleek, but lots of ripeness here. Almost uncomfortably hot finish though. (JR)

Drink 2005 – 2009
Deeper than the standard Chambolle-Musigny. Lots of sweetness and life. Pretty good and, sensibly, not much different in price. Quite tough finish. Should last. (JR)
Drink 2007 – 2012
Fresh and fruity. Lots of attack. Relatively simple, but a good mouthful of honest fruit. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2010
Relatively light crimson. Very fresh and sweet on the nose. Very, very charming already. Lovely dancing fruit. Gentle. Not a whore (see Alix de Montille in the film Mondovino). Quite delicate. Could enjoy this enormously tonight. Not big. A little fine tannin underneath. (JR)
Drink 2005 – 2009
Tense and not especially recognisable as a grand cru. Difficult to rate at present. (JR)
Drink 2009 – 2020
Broad and sweet. Scented. Flattering. Forward. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2011
Full and round. Even quite opulent. Some honey. Most open of the range. Fresh finish. (JR)
Drink 2006 – 2012

CS. Deep crimson. Thick and sweet and spicy. More sweetness than practically any other Burgundy wine. So much flattery – can it be good for one? Almost reminiscent of a Fisherman’s Friend throat lozenge. Drying, but treacle-sweet and spicy and very intense. Some will love this, others will hate it. (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2018
Very light nose. Full and sweet, but not very delineated or fresh. Masses of very tough tannins. Sulky. May improve. (JR)
Drink 2009 – 2014

Quite raw fruit on the nose, then sweetness. Very, very chewy. Lots of sweet substance. Tannins very insistent. (JR)

Drink 2008 – 2013

Lightly honeyed nose. Quite fat. Pleasant, but too hot on the finish.

(Négoce) (JR)

Drink 2006 – 2007
