Hunter Valley Wine Show Day One

One day down and only two to go and it was a relatively painless day by Australian wine show standards with a total of a mere 134 wines to taste. Longstanding wine judge Ian ‘Safe Pair of Hands’ McKenzie who chaired my panel said early on, “135, eh? That should be a very comfortable day.”
High point was the afternoon’s class of 56 Semillons ranging from some superb but young 2005s, the best Semillon vintage this century, back to some lovely mature wines as old as 1997.
Low point was the Chardonnays from 2004 and back, far too many...
