Do dry German whites last?

This great tasting, shown in two short films in Battle of the white giants – video, pitted the best mature dry German Rieslings against some rather random wines from elsewhere. It took place at the Kühling-Gillot winery in Bodenheim overlooking a beautiful garden tended by Carolin Spanier-Gillot’s father, who constructed this gazebo from city ironwork that was about to be thrown away.
About 20 of us, wine writers, wine merchants, sommeliers and wine collectors, tasted the wines in the flights shown below, poured most efficiently by sommelier Jan Boorman. We knew exactly what the wines were and our ‘task’...
