Last year was huge for John Hughes. At the Sydney Royal Wine Show in July the 44-year-old South Australian winemaker walked away with no fewer than five trophies – including Best Wine of Show – for his 2017 Rieslingfreak No 3 Riesling 2017 Clare Valley. This followed on from the Young Gun of Wine competition in June, where his 11 fellow finalists picked Hughes as the winner of their peer-voted Winemakers’ Choice award.
