Does anyone else in the world celebrate Valentine’s Day with as much commercial gusto as Americans? We give our loved ones – romantic and familial – greeting cards, long-stemmed roses, chocolates in heart-shaped boxes and “I Love You” Mylar balloons, and crack open bottles of pink bubbly over romantic dinners in restaurants. Between Christmas and Valentine’s Day, we keep Hallmark et al in business.
It’s a shame more of us don’t look to late-harvest white wines for a Valentine’s Day treat and after-dinner libation. I have no statistics at hand on dessert-wine consumption in the States, but personal dining...
