Ups, downs and naturalistas in Burgundy

17 November The estimate for the total 2017 harvest, close to the 10-year average, has now been added.

7 November 2017 Two souvenirs from a recent short trip to Burgundy.

First are the official figures in hectolitres for wine production for the last 11 years. Totals for the generous 2017 vintage are not yet in but are eagerly awaited. I will be writing more about the last two harvests on Saturday. These totals include all the wine made in Chablis (average annual production is almost 300,000 hl/7.9 million gal) and the Mâconnais (average annual production more than 300,000 hl), hence the much higher numbers for white burgundy than red. Rosé production is tiny.

Second, when lunching (very well) at the Rôtisserie du Chambertin in Gevrey (restaurant and bed and breakfast), we all had a leaflet clipped to our menus publicising the Salon du Vin Naturel in Dijon organised by www.reunionstupeuxrboire.fr last Sunday and Monday. I was intrigued to see this roll-call of names of producers taking the natural path, especially those in Burgundy, where few sales aids are needed:

Marc Soyard, Dom de la Cras
Sarnin-Berrux
Les Boisseau, Dom la Vigne Mouton
Vincent Thomas, Dom de la Chappe
