Most of the money is now in to the Wine Relief 2007 coffers and it looks as though the total raised is a truly wonderful £753,592, a sum that goes on behalf of British wine lovers and wine trade straight to the projects run by Comic Relief, all part of the 2007 Red Nose Day campaign.
From January 31 to March 16 this Comic Relief initiative saw the UK’s biggest wine retailers donate 10 per cent from the sale of selected wines to help tackle poverty and social injustice in the UK and Africa. Stores across the country stocked a wide selection of Wine Relief wines, many of which were detailed here.
This was the fifth biennial campaign for Wine Relief, which began in 1999. So far the initiative has raised well over £2.7 million to help some of the world’s most vulnerable people. The biggest single contribution came, perhaps not surprisingly, from the biggest single UK retailer of wine, Tesco, who really got behind Wine Relief and managed to raise a total of more than £282,000.
