Creative publisher of South Africa's naughty wine magazine Grape Tim James has come up with this image to illustrate one of my gripes to him about the too-high incidence of overripe flavours in some South African (and Californian, and Australian, and French) reds. I plan to use it in my tasting notes to denote any wine that seems to have been made from fruit that has been allowed to go Too Far – though I must confess that the phrase 'dead fruit' is copyright Brian Croser of Petaluma. See his latest salvo at the Australian wine industry.
