One of the great and mysterious attributes of the 2008 bordeaux vintage is the fact that so many of the more modest wines were showing so well earlier this month. Given the pretty terrible condition of the grapes when they were harvested, one assumes that the strictest of selections was needed to be able to produce decent tasting samples among the top wines. Even selling at the 'bargain' price of 100 euros a bottle, the first growths can presumably easily afford to make such selections. Production costs are a small fraction of this.
