Yapp Brothers was the first specialist retailer of Rhône (and Loire) wines in the UK when in 1969 dentist Robin Yapp was looking for areas which more traditional merchants had not yet sewn up. Today the company is run by his son Jason and stepson Tom and is a bit more wide-ranging, but the Rhône is still its strength. Robin cleverly, for example, signed up Jean-Louis Chave and other classic names of the northern Rhône.
On Tuesday 30 Oct Yapp will be hosting a pretty comprehensive tasting of Rhône wines, including some rare, older vintages, in the august surroundings of Vintners’ Hall in the City of London where five kings once feasted together.
They will be showing wines from such leading producers as J-L Chave, Auguste Clape, Alain Graillot, Patrick Jasmin, Joel Champet, Château Grillet, Georges Vernay, Le Vieux Donjon, Domaine St Gayan, and Domaine Maby. The tasting will encompass all the key appellations from both northern and southern Rhône with wines from all so far released vintages of this century as well as key vintages of the 1990s from their archive stocks.
Tickets are £25 each.
