California is blessed with the climate and soils to grow just about any grape, and indeed, winemakers throw a multitude of varieties against the wall to see which ones stick. Albariño, Grüner Veltliner, Tannat and Sagrantino are just a few of the recent adherents.
An antidote to that is Sauvignon Republic, a winery based in Santa Rosa, near the Russian River Valley, that makes nothing but Sauvignon Blanc – not the most fashionable grape in the Golden State despite its immense charms, and certainly not the most profitable, in the land of high-end Cabernet Sauvignon.
