Woolworths is a chain of distinctly downmarket stores throughout the UK but someone there has had a brilliant idea and executed it well. I've never had any dealings with Woolies but on Friday I was assailed by the news that they are putting a £5 champagne into their (relatively few) licensed stores – thereby undercutting the cheapest champagne in Britain (around £10 from the likes of Asda and Tesco) by 50% and gaining acres of media coverage.
