The Austrians, having wooed us with their Grüner Veltliners, Rieslings and Sauvignon Blancs, are now pretty keen to convince us of the quality of their reds. There was a time when, like the rest of the world, they seemed obsessed by producing copies of red bordeaux and by showing off just how much new oak went into them, but they have been outgrowing this phase.
