There are roughly two soil types in the Langhe, formed during the Tortonian and Helvetian epoch, and characterised by sedimentary clay and calcareous marl. Both types are interspersed with blue, yellow or red sandstone and layers of sand or a combination of these, creating endless permutations and, therefore, stylistic differences.
