Marks & Spencer remains a business in transition. Like other bricks and mortar retailers, the company has suffered from the complex challenges posed by changing customer shopping habits; economic downturn and austerity; raw material inflation; and the inexorable rise of online retailing. The company has been trying to find a new direction for itself since 2001 but not without considerable difficulty in the light of the speed of change that is evident in many markets today.
