Richard writes  To be an on-trend pink wine these days requires just three factors: pale colour, dry palate and high price tag. Provence has long been the model for this approach because it is blessed with the right sort of grapes (mainly Grenache), right sort of climate (mainly sunny and warm) and right sort of locals (mainly yacht-owners) to allow all three criteria.

This is why the rest of the rosé-making world is attempting to imitate the Provençal model, though with decidedly mixed results. This is hardly surprising, since so many pinks from Provence itself can't get the formula...
