The French have just introduced mandatory labels on all alcoholic drink, including the finest wines, which warn pregnant women that even low levels of alcohol can cause fetal harm.
This can either take the form of a logo or words but has to be applied to every single bottle, can or box by Oct 2007. Who would ever have thought this would come to pass? If the French have done it, how long can the boozing British escape?
This new requirement applies immediately to all drinks on sale in France but it is surely likely that some of these bottles will find their way outside France.
For comments on the relative drinking habits of Italians and the British see the end of the thread How much wine do you drink a week? which has proved one or our most popular, rivalled only by RSJ which has turned into arrangements for an offline wine dinner there on Dec 7 and one particularly pressing issue discussed at great length in Foie gras and wine dilemma.
