16 November 2016 Specialist wine lawyer John Barker explains: 'In Australia, Prosecco can be used as a vine variety name. On that basis, the Winemakers' Federation of Australia took legal steps to prevent the registration of Prosecco as a GI, because this would have had the effect of preventing its use as a vine variety name. WFA was successful, meaning that Prosecco can continue to be used as a vine variety on Australian wine. However, this does not necessarily prevent Italy from using the name Prosecco in the market.
