Canada – and Ontario in particular – seems tailor-made to appeal to the wine devotee. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay excel in this cool climate, and when carefully made, they can achieve a clarity and purity of varietal character that would be the envy of far better known origins. There is little of the pretension and ego that sometimes besets their North American neighbours – indeed, the atmosphere at the most recent Canadian tasting in London was one of humility, honesty and enthusiasm.
