As a member of the Royal Household Wine Committee, I recently had the chance to taste a wide range of sweet wines blind – not an easy exercise because they came from a wide range of different countries and regions and varied greatly in terms of body and sweetness. The organiser of the tasting, the Queen's Cellarmaster, did his best to present the wines in some sort of sensible order, but it is always difficult – especially when some of the wines were very delicate low-alcohol Mosels, which inevitably seem a bit thin when tasted alongside more substantial sweet wines...
