Slovenia is like an eastern extension of Friuli in north east Italy or, as the Slovenians might put it, Friuli is effectively a western extension of Slovenia. And the best wines – generally fragrant, quite full-bodied whites which can age beautifully – are remarkably similar. The many grape varieties grown there are frequently blended.
There are basically three wine regions which, confusingly for outsiders, look rather similar words at first glance:
