The right bank suffered far more than the left from the late-April frosts, as shown in Gavin Quinney’s frost map at the end of his article Bordeaux 2017 shrinkage charted but the vineyards on the plateau of St-Émilion and Pomerol were generally protected by the greater elevation, albeit not much more than 80 m (260 ft) or so above sea level in the former and up to 40 m in the latter. The usually favoured Côtes, the limestone slopes below the plateau, were not always immune.
