Jean Rijckaert, La Roche Vieilles Vignes 2009 Pouilly-Fuissé
A touch of gold in the colour. Quite intense with a smoky orange-peel note. Pith, smoke and oak dust overlay a richness and glossy rounded weight, yet there is lift on the finish. Perhaps just a tiny touch more freshness would be good? (TC)

DOMAINE ARMELLE ET BERNARD RION
Trying hard. They have one or two great holdings, especially Vosne Chaumes right up by Tâche. Daughter Alice (ex Tasmania) is gradually refining the wines, I think. They taste as though yields should come down.

Dom Armelle et Bernard Rion, Les Chaumes Premier Cru 2009 Vosne-Romanée
Very rich and exciting, but then their plot is just across a tiny road from La Tâche! Very good ingredients – lovely sap and body and flattering fruit, though one feels it could be just a little more ambitious. Great for early drinking. (JR)

Dom Armelle et Bernard Rion, Aux Murgers Premier Cru 2009 Nuits-St-Georges

Dom Armelle et Bernard Rion, Grand Cru 2009 Clos de Vougeot
Their only wine still in cask in late Oct 2010 and it will be bottled Dec. Light cherry red. Easy and fruity but with good structure underneath. Very frank and with no faults. All the ingredients are there, they just need slightly more ambition, or lower yields? Very frank and open. (JR)

Dom Daniel Rion et Fils, Les Hauts Pruliers Premier Cru 2009 Nuits-St-Georges

Dom Daniel Rion et Fils, Les Beaux Monts Premier Cru 2009 Vosne-Romanée
Again that shockingly intense cherry fruit on the nose. Almost too concentrated, as if in some way denatured, hence the minus.(Certainly not for lovers of delicate styles.) That same concentration carries through on the palate. Dry, fine and savoury on the finish. Impressive fruit almost covers the tannins though they are tight and fine. (JH)
