Champagne deals – the good and the bad

Written by Giles Fallowfield.

As I explained in Champagne prices slashed, many of the supermarkets have taken to running so-called half-price deals on their own brands of champagne. Such champagnes have to appear on the shelf of some stores in the group for a set period at the nominal full price in order that they can legally claim to be selling them at half price later. But in reality the special-offer price is far closer to their true value, and with so many good offers around on genuinely well-made Champagnes, these bogus deals should be avoided.

Below are the offers that the big UK retailers have so far admitted to be making over the next few weeks, although I will be adding more, including quite a number tomorrow, 2 Dec. I have put those that seem attractive in bold, and those that I would suggest avoiding in italics.
