Fifth Wines of Chile Awards top wines

Friday 18 January 2008 • 3 min read
Julia sends the following complete list of the gold and silver medals awarded last night in Santiago as the culmination of the 5th Wines of Chile Awards which she has been judging. It looks as though the judges, including several Masters of Wine, Joanna Simon and Jamie Goode of www.wineanorak.com, were tougher than in previous years.  Golds represented just 2.7% of entries, silvers 17%.

I have asterisked(*) the trophy winners. One of the most garlanded wine producers this year is Anakena, the Rapel-based winery set up by Jorge Gutiérrez with Chilean entrepreneur Felipe Ibanez, its 250 ha of vineyards being spread between Cachapoal, Colchagua and Casablanca. Luis Felipe Edwards of Colchagua also performed well.

Julia adds these comments:

Reactions at the tables last night were quite subdued, but I think that was more a reflection of the Chilean character than that the wines that won were a huge surprise – although the Gillmore red from Maule is not a well known wine and the region in general has not be rated that highly in the past, even though it has some great old vine vineyards.

The red blend that won best in show was in its very first vintage.

GOLDS
