Here are Julia’s general observations based on her intensive three days’ judging at the Fifth Wines of Chile Awards last week, when she will have been exposed to many of the best wines that Chile can offer (up to a maximum retail price of £25). Before judging and while recovering from jetlag, the judges visited the Santiago fish market, where Julia was perplexed by the identity of this shellfish. They were also given a helicopter ride to show them a literal overview of the vineyards, the Maipo Valley, and one of the glaciers (see below) near the Argentine border.
