The most elusive skill required for tasting en primeur Bordeaux is an understanding of how the wines will evolve. This demands good experience of tasting different young wines of the same vintage – known as horizontal tasting – as well as an understanding of the back vintages of a given château, aka vertical tasting.
Diagonal knowledge of this type is only really gained by long experience. Hence the enormous benefit of tastings such as this vertical, offered by Ch Climens during primeurs week.
